Gain settings and max manual sensitivity.

New member
I want to gain a little more depth out of the Etrac and one of my goals for the year was to try maxing out my sensitivity. The only trouble is all the falsing I get. The typical feilds that I metal detect in run about a 23-24 in auto plus 3. When I bump up to 30 manual all hell starts to break loose. My question is will playing with the gain a little help out?? I always have my gain and also volume maxed out. Im also almost always using 12x15 sef. Heres my setting now.....
2 tone ferrous
Deep off
Fast off
high trash
ground difficult
gain at max
auto plus 3

I sometimes put the deep to on but have not noticed much of a difference. Maybe I should keep on? Also is my gain too high? Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing what you guys and gals think. HH Joe

Joe I think that with Auto +3 and the sef coil your going to get fantastic depth. Manual is only 30 at it's highest and your at Auto 23-24 +3 so your almost the same. You could start at Manual 24 and go up a no. at a time and see how it sounds though. GAIN at 30 makes any deep objects sound the same as shallower ones is all that does. Lowering GAIN will make the deepies sound fainter so you know their deeper. DEEP on will add in a filter and slow the processor a bit and may make the signal not as good. FAST on takes out a filter but it chops the sound or clips it making it shorter and quicker. Best used in a lot of targets near each other situation.

Alright....interesting with the fast setting, I knew what fast was used for but did not realize it was actualy shutting a filter off when using it. My thought was that by turning the gain down it may make the machine false less on the deep iron? If that makes any sense.

I hope I stated those right I was trying to remember what I read in Andy's book on Explorers/Etrac. If you don't have get one it's a fantastic wealth of knowledge on these machines and what everything does.

I do have the book but don't think it goes into much detail about maxing out the machines capabilities.

Ok so I am somewhat wrong about Andy's book not having enough about making the Etrac "hotter" . It is actually displayed on pages 101-104. I guess it is something that just has to be played with as per site conditions and also user preference. So what do you guys use? Maybe taking an average of what is actually being used out there in the feild will give the real results of what is best to use. From what I know from past posts most guys use auto plus 3 and if I can remember correctly most were using a gain of 28 which amplifies but also distinguishes a deeper from shallow target. But now that the Etrac has been out for quite awhile now you guys may have changed it up a little, so what is everyone using now??

As mentioned previously, I'd also change to Fast ON. Gain amplifies the audio response from what the coil senses in the ground, much like a volume control changes the audio level on your radio. But when you have static on a radio station, turning down the volume won't make the static go away. Similarly, lowering the Gain will not make your problem go away. I'd suggest your problem more likely comes from your Sensitivity settings when using the larger coil. Larger coils are more succeptible to changes in ground conditions because they have to analyze more soil at any one time. More soil usually results in more magnetic interference. More magnetic interference usually results in instable Sensitivity levels. By setting your Sensitivity manually, you've taken away one of the most effective functionalities of the E-TRAC. The ability to self-adjust Sensitivity levels "on the fly".

Auto Sensitivity has 3 channels operating at three different levels. Those levels are determined in software, based on the conditions of the ground. If one channel becomes irratic due to magnetic interference, the E-TRAC changes the level of that channel. I land hunt in the Midwest and don't use manual Sensitity. My highest Auto Sensitivity levels are usually in the mid-upper 20's. I use Auto +3 in less trashy places and drop down to Auto in areas with lots of targets. My reasoning is because when I'm using +3 in the Auto mode, the E-TRAC provides that +3 "boost" to the levels of all three channels. But even then, all three channels are still operating independently of each other and the levels are based on ground conditions. In manual mode, all 3 channels are set at the same level. If the E-TRAC software determines that ground conditions would be better served by operating at a different level, it can't switch to a channel with a different level because you've locked all three of them in to the same level, manually.

Auto Sensitivity is a great concept. I don't completely understand how the technology works. But I figure if the Minelab engineers are sharp enough to design a detector that ignores the effects of mineralization (allowing the user to not worry about maintaining a proper ground balance), then they surely designed Auto Sensitivity with our best interests in mind as well. Allowing me to tweak Auto Sensitivity + or - (with 3 variables either way) allows me the flexibility to accomodate the conditions of the ground and still utilize the technology behind it. If I were using a larger than stock coil and encountered your situation, I'd definitely be using Auto Sensitivity. If it still chattered, I'd try putting a negative offset in the Auto Sensitivity before I lowered the Gain. JMHO HH Randy

Thank you Randy for your wealth of information. I tend to do more auto plus 3 but I will have to give a lower setting a go next time there are alot of targets in a small area.
