Here is a pic of a 6.1 gram nugget that I found with my Garrett infinium :garrett: on the weekend:detecting:. In the victoria central gold fields in Australia :ausflag:

I was using the stock coil 14x10 dd, I tryed to use my 14x10 mono but the ground was to mineralized. The nugget was only about 4" deep

I was detecting with my uncle, which he was using a minelab gpx 4000 :minelab:, he also found 3 small bits about 5 grams.

Lovely find............ well done........... and it's with a 14x10"DD coil to.................that make it outstanding.
It's not often someone actually post a picture of a nugget find with an Infinium LS.

Perhaps submit the storey to AGG&T and get paid, before somebody offer to take the storey and picture off your hands for free.

I have only got the two coils, the stock dd and the 14x10 mono, the mono is no good on the gold fields because the ground is to hot. I just ordered a 5x10 dd to give that ago to see if I missed any smaller nuggets.
 
The 10x5"DD is my favourite, but there is a trap using this coil...........it's light and so often used to fast............. when gold prospecting use it close to the ground and guide it.

I'll agree on the mono coils they are less than compatible with inland places I've been to but fine on a wet beach.

Hi Folks ~ now i have a Situation. I seem to do fine in the goldfields with my 10" X 14" mono , in fact it's all i've used so far with normal settings & works fine. I've cut thru ironstone and picked up all copper family targets .22 bullets, brass cases, gold -with no problem - hotrocks & hematite (in fact it doesnt even read some hematite stones). Here's my problem ~ i was going to trade my DD 14" today for other prospecting stuff cause i thought i'd never really need it, you guys saying that 6gram nugget couldnt have been signaled with the big Mono at 4" deep - that's a decent size small nugget. Wouldnt about any Decent vlf or pi had an identifiable target Signal such as a 6gr. nugg. 4" deep ? seriously ~ i'm stumped. . . Ken

When I put my 14x10 mono on I couldn't get it to settle, it was doing my head in. So I put my dd back on and no prob's, it was a bit jumpy but I could put up with it, not like the mono. I don't know where you live but some gold field in Australia have super hot mineralized ground, my uncle was using his gpx 4000 minelab and he was having some porb's in some spots as well.
 
HI Ken,
You can rest assured that the big DD is capable of finding a 6 gm nugg at anywhere from the surface to better than 12 inches in the ground depending on all of the usual variables. And I would guestimate the the average solid squarish sluggy 6gm nugg would sound of at better than 10 inches in tough ground
 
K - Thanks, but Fishers Ghost or ivanll - do I need to hang to my big DD for reserve ? dont know if i'll ever be down under but for Mojave Desert & Arizona, i wonder if i'll ever have ground that the Mono is of no use ? we've got some pretty tough ground for VLF sometimes but i can usually run in a mode to still hear a good signal ~ is the groung so tough over there that the Inf. Big mono or 8" cant be used for nugget shooting ? Thanks in advance - Ken
 
HI Ken,

I would hang on to the DD, It is good for the deep bigguns in the extreme iron rich ground. it is also smoother on the salt beaches but lacks a bit of sensitivity to very small jewellery. It can find the small nuggs 0.5gm for certain but the signal can wishy washy and difficult to zero in on.

There are some areas here where the monos struggle (so I have been told) but I have not encountered it yet.
From what I have read, Ivanll has used the inf and all coils in ground that has been difficult to quieten and he knows the infinium very well..
The monos are fairly good and it will have to be very tough ground to stop them.

As a rule I think I can safely say that the Infinium will breeze over any ground that stops the high end high frequency VLFs but the VLFs will be more sensitive to the very small bits of gold within an inch or two of the surface. By small I mean less than 0.3gm or there abouts.

People are concentrating on the small stuff out here at the moment, so toss an AT Gold (Australianised version)in your kit if you are comming over here or bring an 3 x 7 or 5 x 10 DD for the mullock heaps with the Infinium.

Just my thoughts, not gospel.

Thanks much Adrian ~ so Mullock heaps are what we call Tailings or Tailing Piles over here ? I'm not very concerned with nugg. under 1gr. anyway, but it's good to know the coil traits to weight values on gold sensitivity.Oh Sorry,(to ask this burden) but would Super Appreciate if you +/or ivanll could give a 4 coil duty description such as :

1 - 10 x 14 DD = Beach Salt, high mineral nuggeteering., etc

2 - 10 x 14 mono . . . . . . . . . . .

3 - 5 x 10 . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .

4 ~ 8" mono . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1. 10 x 14 DD = Beach Salt, Scuba, Salt Lakes, high mineral nuggeteering. All types of metal detecting in all types of groung conditions.

2. 3 x 7 DD = Beach Salt, Salt lakes,High mineral nuggetting, coin shooting in parks n gardens. THIS COIL NOT FOR SCUBA, SHALLOW WADING
ONLY.

3. 5 x 10 DD= As per 3 x 7

4. 10 x 14 mono .= As per 10 x 14 DD....... (theoretically more likely to be noisy in hot ground) + better sensitivity to small nuggets than the big DD


4. 8" mono = As per 10 x 14 mono.

All of the coils can be used for any kind of metal detecting and all will work very well in the gold fields but the big coils will be sensitive to electrical interference in suburban areas. making them difficult to use effectively as a coin shooter in parks and gardens.

All of the coils will respond to the same minimum size gold nugget but the smallest DD will give slightly sharper tones than the large coils.
 
Thanks for the breakdown A K Adrian , i saved it in Notepad for Reference. I appreciate it. last question (4 now ) ~ will keep it simple , Since I wont do Scuba or care for much under gram nuggets other than my big mono & the 8" Dog chewed that i havent soldered cable yet, What would be Your choice for a 3rd. coil for general prospecting and some beach wading - big DD or 5 x 10 (aside from the 3x7) ? In other words having the 2 monos , Trade the big DD to 5x10 or just keep 14"DD ? would the 5x7 give any sharper tones than the 14' DD's
