Get a sound but no ID :shrug:

Yesterday I was detecting and a couple times I'd get a good hit, horseshoe about half filled on the conductive (right) side but no matter what I did there was no target i.d.
I was too tired to dig so didn't. Anyone else run across this phenomenon?

I tested a number of targets yesterday, beyond a certain depth I was still getting solid tone hits but no ID just the -- displayed. Not with half the horseshoe filled though, just a bit of horseshoe to no horseshoe.

No I spent yesterday air testing all manner of gold, silver, and clad targets. First field test later this morning. I'm not overly optimistic we have nasty volcanic black sand here which is why I ordered the additional HF 9 inch round coil...which Deus forgot to ship me So I'll have to use the 11 inch LF coil.

Sounds like a hot rock. The only way to know for sure is to dig....

Common with the Deus. That's why you need to learn tones. And be prepared to practice because they are subtle. I'm just beginning to get the difference that Calabash talks about between trash and round objects like coins. I am still foiled by foil.

Tony, I agree with Mark that it is probably a hot rock. You can test it by engaging the ground notch or maybe set your ground balance 4-5 points positive if you can and if the tone disappears it's a hot rock. If you have a lot of hot rocks in your area just use the ground notch in your programs to eliminate them.

Yes, this morning I was foiled again by being fooled by foil failing to facilitate a feel for the trash. It sounded really good. Read really good.

A couple days ago I encountered a couple targets like u describe. Sure was a good tone but when I looked at the display it was way shallow with just no numbers.I walked away from the 1st one but dug the 2nd one expecting iron. It was a very rusty tightly folded football shaped bottle cap.

I dug a war nickel last week in my front yard that lit up half of the horseshoe on the right side, but no VDI...nothing. Dug it out of curiosity and was only 4" deep...I was hunting in 4kHz so I'm sure any higher frequency would have VDIed the nickel a little better.

That's interesting. I'll have to start digging those. I was just too pooped to pop when it was occurring and didn't want to dig another hole as I was dragging myself back to the car.
