Getting better

Have a question, do you find it easier pin pointing any item not using the pinpointing mode? Today I stayed away from the pin pointing mode and just narrowed my swing over an item until I got the smallest picture and then from another direction and found I was getting all the items about where I marked. But every once in a while it seemed that I was off a bit.

I have been using the SE for a month now (at least 4 times a week) and the deepest target I have found is 12 inches. I haven't found any real deep coins, maybe I need to find older areas.

I never use pinpoint mode. If you find you're off, usually it's because the target is tipped which causes center to be as much as 3" is some cases. Pinpoint mode with other metals in the ground can be very difficult.

I did until I bought a WOT. Then I got used to just trying to use regular mode and try to make an X marks the spot. In trashy areas there are many times you can't get a signal 90 degrees apart, then just try rotate the coil as far as possible and still get the signal you were listening to.

Basically in trashy areas there are often half a dozen or more metallic items under your coil at any one time. In Pinpoint you can't tell which is which. You can in normal mode. I do occassionally use pinpoint on iffy signals. If I don't get a good pinpoint over a good sounding target it usually is iron falsing.

Best way around that is a Sun Ray X-1 probe. One extremely important thing though is in pin point mode the machine is a great deal more sensitive and accurate. I myself don't use pinpoint mode other than when I am in the hole with the X-1 Probe, but the accuracy and depth in that mode are far superior then when I am not in pinpoint mode. It's easy to notice with the tiny probe coil but it is still noticeable with the larger coils.

NH Bob.... That is exactly what happened, the coin was at an angle. I checked the hole no coin, I pulled out my pin pointer (automax, still waiting on my X-1) and found the coin on the side of the hole tipped at angle.

I have said this before and someone thought I was nuts and made fun of me......a coin or bottle cap or any flat object will project to the side when on edge while in pinpoint.......and I have buried the holes on lots of targets I thought I had, thinking ghostsignals...... before getting the X-1 Probe.....now when I dig and is not in center of hole...I probe the sides and there it is.....sitting sideways with big flat area pointing to the center hole.....go figure!......HUH....:stars:

I pretty much do what you do Majicman...
My X1 probe is the answer once I start "going down.":detecting:

To bad we couldn't have a on-line club that we can meet in a virtual room once a month. Have a spot light detectorist and give a class on something they like. Find of the month. Tips/Tales...... I really enjoy the forum, but I like talking face to face. virtual is the next best thing.

I don't want everyone knowing I really look like this.
