A metal detectorist who had only just started the hobby has found a stash of gold coins worth around £24,000. Steve Simmons, 63, had only been detecting for two months when he made his discovery in a field near the village of Box in Wiltshire.

He found 14 civil war coins depicting Charles I and James I. The coins are nearly 400 years old and were found just six inches deep.

Mr Simmons was using his C-Scope CS2MX detector on a rocky and rough field when he found the first of the two coins. He put them in his pocket and only realised their value when he looked them up later that day.

The coins are two Charles I gold unites - the second English gold coin that was first produced under the reign of King James I.

He decided to upgrade his detector to an Equinox 600 and went back to the spot where he found the first two coins. He then found a stack of 12 coins buried 18 inches down.

That would be a game changer for sure, now he can afford a detector worth finding stuff. 🤷‍♂️😂
