Good hunt with the LTD

Well-known member
Got in a 4 1/2 hour hunt today with the F 75 LTD using the stock DD coil and I must say I am rather impressed.

I played with bp and cl modes and on the deeper targets switched to de to see what it sounded and read like. The cl mode is a deep mode, but I dug nothing that bp wouldn't hit. I did dig one really deep target, probably the deepest penny I have ever dug, that both bp and cl hit good enough to dig, but all de would do was omit a weak grunt/tic. Nothing that I would have dug. In bp and cl it was a weak, kind of quivering signal, but repeated. It turned out to be a 39d wheatie.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the bp mode hits coins on edge great and at 5-7" depths has a nice tight vdi. I dug a silver war nickel on edge at 6" and it read and sounded very good in the bp mode.

Another thing about the LTD that impressed me was how good it detects targets in tall grass. There are several spots on this particular site that has shallow channels that the mowers glide over and the grass down in these channels is always 5-6" or so high. I worked one 12' long channel that ended up yielding me 7 coins. 2, of which, were silver Rosies at depths of 4-5" under 5" or so of taller grass. Those 7 coins had been missed countless times over the years.

Yes, the LTD is a keeper.

I think the feature of hunting in tall grass would be of great benefit to me, since most people around here don't mow very often. Summer time is coming.

Jim, when you say tall grass do you mean 4-6 inches or 10-15 inches? Because if it is 10-15 inches I think it would be a big advantage in the undergrowth, in the woods.

Thanks in advance, Dave

The grass height in these spots I was hunting today was from about 4 to 6 or 7" deep. Which, is not all that uncommon to have on a typical coinshooting site around here between mowings, during the peak summer mowing months. Don't know about 10-15," though. HH jim tn

hi jim!..happy to hear you are enjoying your new "tool!"..can you say HOW deep the '39 penny was?..also what was your gb and mineral content at the site?....thanks!

hi jim!..in addendum,what was your "disc",AND your sensitivity settings?..thanks!

The penny was in my last small scoop of dirt and when I stuck my shovel straight down in the hole it went a little past the 11" mark I have nicked in the handle. It was all of 10" deep. My g/b was in the low 60's at the time. Historically on this site it runs in the mid 60's and the mineral content is usually around .03. Disc. was 0 and sen. was either 85 or 90. I had just backed off of 95 for a little quieter run when I dug the penny and I don't recall for sure which it was.

If any relic hunters may be wondering about the depth of the LTD, it will definately hit belt plate size targets at least in the 15" depth range in the bp mode. I dug a 4x3x1/2" piece of lead this morning that was a good 3" past the 12" nick on my shovel. I could see it in the bottom of the hole and I stuck my shovel in for a quick measurement. The hit didn't blow my ear phones off, but there was enough good tone left for some more depth. HH jim tn

I still like the high grass hunting capabilities.
:clapping:

thanks jim!....wow!..that's some deep!..regular 75 would pass over it and not hear it,when set up the same way?..IN GENERAL,would you say the 'ltd" runs QUIETER than the regular 75?

regards!

J.T. - I remember Bill Ladd observed that he thought the LTD does, even in the old modes.

I can't compare the two, but I can say I haven't seen any EMI issues with my LTD yet that can't be tamed by turning down the sensitivity.

I know a lot of experts like Bill Ladd and Nasa Tom Dankowski like to hunt with the sensitivity as wide open as possible, but I'm not that good and I often find that by lowering the sensitivity I hear targets a lot better, even deep ones.

The tic I got when switching to the de mode, I would not have dug, at least on this site. The bp mode "boosted" the tone and cleaned it up enough to merit digging.

j.t., I hunt mostly in the trash and run with pretty hot settings. So, I can't say that it runs quieter. In fact, because in the bp mode the chirps, clicks and tones come through so sharp and distinct, I have had to turn the volume on my ear phones down a bit from what I ran it on with my regular F 75. I have gotten used to hearing all the grunts, tics and clicks, which, seems to help me pick up on a good target when I come upon one. HH jim tn

Jerry, I've heard others say the same, I just have not noticed much difference between the two on the same site. But regardless, it's one h**l on a detector. HH jim tn

yeah!. as i have witnesed pretty much the same thing myself when hunting in the trash with the regular 75!...jim!.. it sounds like there is a distinct advantage in the "boost" mode of the "ltd",and it is easy on site to cross circuit from boost to de to determine the strength of the "hits in the field!

thanks!

and you will because i have experienced the same thing in the field, however you can't help but wonder if you are walking over a target and not hearing it either because of the "reduced"..sensitivity!..i think that if the "boost" mode on the ltd proves to be quieter in the "hot" sensitivity settings, then this will be a huge advantage, along with the additional depth that "apparently" is available in the ltd as well!

hi tinfoil!
yeah!..apparently the "powers" at fisher have been able to quiet it down a tad!,..
