Good test for metal detectors

My brother in law showed me the following test and it will show you how capable your machine is in trash. Take 2 old nails and drive them into the ground exactly 2 inches apart. Make sure the ground around the nails is free from any other trash or metal. Now take your detector and run the discrimination up until the nails are just discriminated out. Now take a dime and put it between the 2 nails but put the dime on edge. Then take the detector and see if it will hit on the dime with the nails discriminated out. I used this test when I got my Tek T2 and the T2 had no problem hitting the dime on edge while discriminating out the nails. This is a good test to see how well a metal detector will do in trash while using discrimination. I have had other machines that I know would not hit the dime at all in this scenario. Curious.........was the T2 able to register the dime no matter how close or far the coil was from the targets? What were the coil distances used in your testing? Thanks

What was the depth of your test, and what size coil were you using? Did you try any other coils or just the one stock one?

Nice test ! note the nail marks on the tokens ! see the brown on the tokens that's how close the nail was to the good target.

Good test I will try tomorrow. I have had my t2 for about 2 months now and made several good finds at first. Now it seems to alert on trash even with the disc set to 40. sen 70, tones 3. I seem to have trouble getting the machine to ground balance as the area I hunt is full of trash. Any thoughts?

I used the 11" double d coil and the coil registered on the dime at all heights. everything was at ground level as the nail heads were at ground level and the dime was stuck on edge between the 2. thanks for all ther replies..
