Google maps and problems beyond the help of skew

So, what do you folks do when a map is not drawn to scale accurately across it's extents? Do you reposition the overlay as you go along, pinpointing your areas of interest?
 
Yes, I always re-Position my maps. I use land points to position it.Then mark or note points of interest.
 
Thanks Bob, that's what I thought was the only option with Google maps.
