Some of you know I have been interested in the Explorer and have read your forum for a some time now. I have gone through several detectors in the last 10 years and have owned and learned to operate Radio Shack models, Bounty Hunter models, Teknetics 8500, Mark I, T2's, Garret's CXIII, Garret's Ace 250, and the GTI 2500.....I said all this not to brag....But rather to show some gathered experience.
All which work together as accumulated knowledge which help in understanding the Minelab Explorer model.
Anyway... yesterday was the first day out with the Explorer. I was not intimidated, however...the Explorer wasn't speaking to me. The language was very garbled and the tones were like an old Tek 8500 sort of.
The depth gauge leaves a lot to be desired. Hope that future Explorers have a numbered meter for depth. Just seemed cheap for 1000.00 detector!
Yesterday my thoughts were reserved about it's future in my house!
How many of you been here in this position? You spend on a new detector only to find out it's not all it's been cracked up to be.
So I get up early this morning and decide to check out a particular older hammered site, just see what comes up if you know what I mean?
My game plan was to hit this site close to a park so that when I got bored with the detector not speaking to me I could coin shoot the park hoping to learn the Explorers language.
Well....it was a good game plan, and it all came together. I must say after the GTI 2500 I thought there was no way that Mine Lab good be better, maybe just as good... but not really better! I was wrong again!
The Explorer began speaking English today, and I found and dug more coins, relics and junk, than my fair share!
Then I found out why....Mine Lab has found the perfect balance between keeping you in what I call the "Find Box". The find box is just where we want to be as a hobby or a professional detectorist.
Most detectors find something. But other detectors keep you on the verge of the outside of the "Find Box". Sure you'll make some impressive finds, I've done pretty well hunting lately... and the wife who always chooses her Tek Turbo over any detector does well also!
Today with the Explorer I dug a lot of coins, over a my very hunted area that I have hammered for the last three years. I dug several relics from farm equipment to tools, I have pasted up with many other detectors.
I dug signals that showed up as crown caps more than 6 inches deep!
Other detectors didn't even see them. Two Holes turned up a Crown Cap at 10"...Never even showed on the GTI 2500? I have hit this area before, I had all but given up on the area!
So okay...all you guys that think why bother with and Explorer or a Minelab....this was for you!
I'll be keeping the Explorer, cause already after the second day I really feel it is the best all- around detector for me to use. I see what it's capable of, but I realize I have so much more to learn. I'm not afraid of it now I look forward to it's challenges.
I am certain enough...even now... after only the second outing that I will find more items and better finds with this detector that I am willing to state it's excellance.
The weight factor I feared is not as bad as I thought it might be.
It is heavy, but well worth the weight especially comparing it to The GTI 2500.
So if your in doubt if an explorer is for you.....It's a great all around detector, compared to the ones I've used!
The sounds of the Explorer reminds me of the old Teks with much greater power, depth, and information available ever second your treasurer hunting.
Thanks for all your great information and wisdom of this Detector, and know that you have all made a tremendous difference in the enjoyment of my hobby.
It's no wonder to me now why the Explorer has better finds than other detectors. It's programed to keep you in the "FINDS BOX". Staying in the detecting zone equals better finds, more finds, and quality finds.
Have you ever heard anyone say"I've had better finds when there wasn't any discrimination modes
Just ask an old timer....Minelab keeps you in the "Finds Box
The "Finds Box: is actually a sweet place where the All Metal mode and Discrimanation modes come together
to register both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals.
I'm glab Minelab was able to bring the two together again. I'm not saying that both are good, I'm saying that both are good together!
I hope I didn't confuse anyone.
Let's get in the BOX!
Happy Hunting
