Got Another Lesson On Deep Coins With F5

In an earlier post I said how nice it was to get several deep coins in a short time to get the feel and sounds of deep coins. While detecting this am, I noticed that the ground phase was only 57 which is the lowest phase of any of the spots I have hunted with the F5 so far. I have recently added the 11 inch dd coil and when I started hunting I noticed that only one bar was blacked out on the meter. With the low ground phase and low mineraliziation, I upped the sens to 75 and the threshold to +1 and the detector ran smooth. I usually run the sens at 65 and the threshold at - 1 or 0. I probalbly could have inched the setting higher, but when the very first target of the morning was a silver roosie at a solid 8 inches, I kept the settings and hoped my luck would continue. The next target was a wheat penny at a similar depth. I was now dialed into the faint whisper or whine of a deeper coin(I use three tones). It is not loud, but I had absolutely no trouble hearing and understanding the sounds that these deep coins made. In the next hour, I found another silver dime and 5 more wheats. Being able to run the sens into the 70's seemed to get me the extra couple of inches I needed to get to the level of the coins. When I moved on to another spot, I immediately ran into the normal ground phase readings of 80's with three bars blackened. I could not get the detector smoothed out until I dropped the sens to 60 and the threshold to -1. I did not find any coins deeper than 4 inches, but I did sniff two wheats out of heavy trash. When you get a detector to "click", you learn to develope a higher level of confidence. When ever I hunt, I want to feel like I can find the oldest coins that a site has. I am very confident that the F5 will be able to do just that. R.L.
