Got my first silver

I got up today at the ungodly hour of 6;15am. That's early for me. I'm usually up at 9:30am. So I get to the park figuring I was going to work around the old graveyard because I just liked "the way it looked" before I get there I start working near the hill near the pond and then I work the hill a little bit and then I start working near the concrete steps near the water's edge. it was about 6" off to the side of the concrete. Something starts banging at my ear like 2-29. I dig about 7-8" and then I see a big shiny thing. I say to myself, O darn it, it's a bottle cap so in haste I stick the raptor under it and lay into it a little. When I finally pull it out a 1958 Franklin Half Dollar is smiling at me. Not only is it silver but it's a big one at that. That gave me a boost for the rest of the hunt. I say to myself, Is this real? I keep looking at it with a little victory dance going on inside of me. I can't believe it. I have to keep pulling it out every few minutes to look at it. I even brought it to the breakfast shop and showed the waitress. The curse is lifted!! You can see on the reverse where I scratched it a little when I was ticked off that I thought it was a bottle cap. I will not be repeating that attitude anymore until I know for sure what the find is before I see it. The scratch looks worse in the photo than what it looks like in your hand. I haven't cleaned it yet. It's in pretty good shape less the scratch. The other coin is a badly corroded 1944 wheatie.

I remember my first Benji....and it is still the only one...1957....the field is right down the street from me....They are a rare find...not many got lost or found from what I have seen on here....Congrats King! If that is your first silver...man you started out Like a KING should! BIG!

Let me be the first to say CONGRATS not only on the first silver but a BIG COIN at that! WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!! :clapping:

Way to go King. Congrats!!!

Like you, my first silver was a Benjamin Half, but that was about 20 years ago. I was so new at it then that I had to look at the date just to make sure it was pre-1964. :bouncy:

Now that you got the first one out of the way, the pressure is off and let the real fun begin.

Keep up the great work.

As the others have said what a way to start out for your first Silver and a Big One at that. They are in fact hard to find for some reason or another. Now that this one is out of the way you can relax and start going for others and older ones, which you surely will find. This is the icing on the cake for you King, Nice find and keep it up. Looking forward to more pic's of you soon to be finds.
HH John

Big time congrats bud!!!! I am still lookin for my first large silver...

:clapping:Still at work, but had to log in to congratulate you on that first silver. Isn't it a great feeling to find something so cool, and then be able to share that excitement around. Good going, King, and thanks for sharing.

Fabulous Frankie! There just aren't enough silver halves out there as hunters seem to have cherry-picked them long ago. You either have to hit virgin sites or hunt the really hard to get to areas of parks. I have found them to under tree roots and such. People probably have picked up the signals but can't liberate the coins because of their proximity. I remember one dry summer where the banks of a lake lay exposed because of the receding water. I was hunting a incredibly rocky area of the shoreline. I got a good signal and proceed to start moving rocks , pebbles and mud out of the way. Out popped a Franklin half that was tarnished black. I almost fell over backwards into the water, detector and all. It was my first silver half and although tarnished, it was a beautiful sight to me. It sounds like you had the same type of experience. Enjoy the fruits of your endeavor!!!

I'm real happy for you friend. You have been working your butt off and now you've been rewarded with a SWEET find. I hope you find many more silvers in the future...and I'm sure you will. Good luck on your next hunt:thumbup:

mr. king in person! great going there, reminds me of my first.it's hard to leave that spot is'nt it??and it don't hurt to keep looking at it either.many happy more.:jump::minelab:

enough but I didn't think literally. Oh well, it could have been much worse. It's still a fantastic find and to think that your 1st Silver would be a Big One is something Extra Special. Congratulations on a Great Find and hope the Silver starts flowing more frequently into your pouch. Good way of describing that feeling King when you noticed what it was and what that great feeling was like for you. We all have experienced that feeling and now your truly one of us King. Welcome aboard! If that Half was there, then there should be Dimes and Quarters as well so Good Luck and HH to you and hope to see another post of Silver in the near future. Again! Congratulations! You've Earned It!!

Way to go King.:clapping: Now, keep your butt out of that fitness center and start hitting that place where you got that nice FH. Go to the gym or whatever when the snow is on the ground and pound that site to death!! HH.

Actually it wasn't in a way. When you want something bad enough and it makes you happy you'll do it. Things that you do not like to do you'll make any excuse in the book not to do it. We're all like that. I was determined though and this sounds weird but I actually felt like I was going to have a good day. Actually I was using the settings Great Republic turned me on to. AM mode,Ferrous sounds and I was using 24 semi-auto. Next on the agenda is to go manual but in this park it is about light - medium trash so I'll experiment with that as was suggested.

I'm looking forward to going out tomorrow too. I should be able to get in 6 hours or more. They say this park is pounded out but I beg to differ. It might have produced many finds years ago but there is still a lot left for someone with determination and a good MD. I am getting coins everytime I swing the coil. I have seen the MD here , they swing too fast, bad swinging technique (not parallel to the ground from left to right) and their using low-end MD AND their using discrimination because their lazy and they think it's helping them, heehee.

I was also thinking of you throughout the day when you said,"your brain is the discriminator" After a while as I am thinking of this the concept hits me of everytime I hear a sound my brain is like a knife cutting out the bad sounds from the good ones. I like Digital better than Smartfind and because of the horrendous glare of the SE especially with the rain cover I enlarge it and this helps a great deal on double checking a sound for a newbie like me. So if it sounds good, the reading is good I'll go back to regular screen and check the depth and watch that for location as well.

Hopefully I can get some more silver tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement, it's paying off for me.

Many more will follow. Photos always make the coins looks more scratched up than they do in person. And hey, don't be ashamed if you have to sleep with "your precious" under your pillow.

King-Ghidorah,congratulations on the Franklin Half.Yesterday I went through some coins before selling and was surprised by some of the key dates that was just barely nicked when recovered.Unfortunately we all learn the hard way.The Franklin half is still a very nice find. HH Ron.
