I've been using my GQ for the last week during low tides at Zuma beach. I feel that I'm getting pretty good at using the GQ. I found my first jewelry with it this last week. one 14k gold ring, one silver ring, one silver rope chain, one St. Christopher medal, and a Tiffany & Co. money clip that looks gold and silver and has the markings of 925 & 750 (what does the 750 mean) on the end of the clip.
All finds were in the wet sand at low tide. I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually got so tired from digging deep targets that I reduced my SAT and reject so I wouldn't have to keep digging deep targets and I was still finding small targets that were over 12 to 15 inches deep. I started out with my SAT set at 3 O'clock, Reject at 0, and the threshold set around 11 O'clock. I later adjusted the SAT to 12 O'clock and reject to about 8 O'clock. I read a suggestion about setting the threshold so that it almost disappears so you can find the deep targets and it worked well for me. As soon as I did this I started hearing those soft "bumps" in the threshold. I actually had to give up on some targets that were either two small and kept falling back into the hole or were just too deep for me to keep digging.
One thing I noticed was that when the wind started blowing hard or you tried to swing the coil across a steep slope at certain angles it made the unit unstable. If I adjusted the angle that I swung the detector the GQ would settle down.
The silver rope chain (49.7 grams) was one of those targets that just gave a very soft "bump"in the threshold. The gold ring was about 10 to 12 inches down and came though loud and clear.
I really love the weight of the unit. I chest mount mine and I can swing it all day. It's just digging those ##### deep hole that gets tiring. I guess the extra 30 pounds I've put on since May doesn't help.
