GQ (you better be in shape)

I've been using my GQ for the last week during low tides at Zuma beach. I feel that I'm getting pretty good at using the GQ. I found my first jewelry with it this last week. one 14k gold ring, one silver ring, one silver rope chain, one St. Christopher medal, and a Tiffany & Co. money clip that looks gold and silver and has the markings of 925 & 750 (what does the 750 mean) on the end of the clip.
All finds were in the wet sand at low tide. I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually got so tired from digging deep targets that I reduced my SAT and reject so I wouldn't have to keep digging deep targets and I was still finding small targets that were over 12 to 15 inches deep. I started out with my SAT set at 3 O'clock, Reject at 0, and the threshold set around 11 O'clock. I later adjusted the SAT to 12 O'clock and reject to about 8 O'clock. I read a suggestion about setting the threshold so that it almost disappears so you can find the deep targets and it worked well for me. As soon as I did this I started hearing those soft "bumps" in the threshold. I actually had to give up on some targets that were either two small and kept falling back into the hole or were just too deep for me to keep digging.
One thing I noticed was that when the wind started blowing hard or you tried to swing the coil across a steep slope at certain angles it made the unit unstable. If I adjusted the angle that I swung the detector the GQ would settle down.
The silver rope chain (49.7 grams) was one of those targets that just gave a very soft "bump"in the threshold. The gold ring was about 10 to 12 inches down and came though loud and clear.
I really love the weight of the unit. I chest mount mine and I can swing it all day. It's just digging those ##### deep hole that gets tiring. I guess the extra 30 pounds I've put on since May doesn't help.

Thanks for the info Randy, good way of losing weight

My achin back gives up.

Thanks for the e-mail Bing. Seems I still have a lot to learn. I thought turning the SAT knob towards fast meant I was getting more depth not less. No wonder I was still digging deep targets. Just imagine what I would have been digging if I turned my SAT towards slow. I wonder what I missed?
Guess I better find my instruction manual.

Having used the Goldquest SS sincr they first came out and being 60 years old I had to become in better shape or check into a nursing home of finally tell my wife to give up the "Pill" as I know I am now sterile (smile).
I have a friend that will make a new scoop for us guys if I can design it for us. The idea is a aluminum 3 to 4 foot post hole digger with 1/2" holes in it like a scoop. I am trying to design this so we can stab it in the sand then spread the arms to clamp the mouth together and retreive...should eliminate abunch of the sand that falls back in...Frank

I use that Monster Stainless steel scoop that Reilly's sells and it weighs about 6 pounds. Add the wet sand and by the end of three hours of digging and pulling, my butt is dragging. The killer is when you just seem to be missing the target and when you finally get it's trash. But it sure is nice when you pull out one of those deep targets and it's a ring.

Thanks for the information. The money clip has a gold strip running down the center. Looks like I've found my first 18kt find.

Yep! That's the one. I think it's one of the best scoops out there. Saves me a lot of time going after those deep ones. I have two magnets glued in the bottom of mine which also saves some time. It sure would be nice to have another handle attached to the original scoop handle so it would be easier to pull the scoop up out of the hole.

i think keven has stopped making this scoop, but bill babb will custom make this size out of alum. if you ever need one.

What does this photo really say of us? Scary isn't it! Frank
