Anyone ever dig gravel driveways? I know its hard as heck to dig just wondering if anyone has attempted it with any luck and could give a few pointers:goodnight:

Wow - your reading my mind !

I was thinking about it the other day - I've hunted around two 1800's church's a several times - I never found one old coin on the grass areas but I found approx. (20) old coins in the parking areas ! These coins include Barber Dimes - V and Buff. Nickels, SLQ, Indians and Wheat's. Believe it or not - most of these coins were in pretty good shape even though they have been driven over for years - it seems that if the coin is down 3" to 4" or more - it gets "locked in" and is protected from the traffic driving over it. Also, it makes sense that at most locations more coins and other good items would have been dropped in the parking areas then on the surrounding grass areas.

Think about it - the grass areas have been hunted for years - but how many people would want to dig in a hard packed dirt and gravel parking lot - it's a lot of work !
I grind a very sharp point on my Lesche digger - ( dig wide so you don't ruin the target ) and it's also real handy to carry a few longer different sized flat head screw drivers with you.
And by swinging very low and very - very slow - I've found some great old coins down a good 6" or more in hard packed parking areas - a lot of rock for the E-Trac to see though - amazing !

Good luck ! --- Mark

All the gravel drives I have hunted were hidden. The old, un-used drives that have filled in and grown over with grass. I have found coins in these, but it's usually a huge pain beacuse the gravels are locked together. The coins are typically trash coming from these spots, but I go for silver. Junk silver is still silver!

My father had some fantastic finds in gravel pull offs at the local old park. He told me that if he was having an off day in the grass, he could always pick up some coins gravel hunting before heading back home:)

Found several coins including a 1911 Barber Half in a gravel drive way on a old farm. Rest of the yard only gave up a few wheat cents. A drive way on a house in town produced a 1918 Walking Liberty half and a Barber dime. I think these coins were there before they put down the rock as I found them below the gravel.

Hunted a local drive in theater several years back, the play area produced some nice silver including one Franklin and two Walking Liberty halves. The best showed up out in the gravel areas (it took days to work) where you parked to watch the movies. Had to go home and get a pick to literally bust the coins out of the gravel, Most were in lousy condition, but silver is silver. I never seen anyone else trying to work that area. Rick IL

I found this under some gravel fill yesterday. It's not silver, but still pretty cool. It was about 5" down and yes I had to keep making the hole a little bigger to get the gravel out of the way.

I just can't believe it came out in such good shape. It was only a couple inches under the old dirt before the gravel file was pushed over it. That is what protected it.
