I was Trying to get a Maps forum started,i did ask before i posted it,Guvner said it was fine.
He will be watching the replies,to see how many and who is interested.

I am glad to help everyone,if i can find a map for them,or a link, and they end up finding something.
Very good,i like helping people,as i know a lot of you do.
Everyone can use help, and i think a maps forum would be great.
It all depends on you guys, the number of posts, and the replies.

I think a map forum would be a good idea and very beneficial.

maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't this be like NAPSTER for maps? I'm sure there would be copyright issues that could get someone in trouble if the wrong person got peeved. Not all maps are Public Domain. Please tell me I'm wrong because I would love to have this kind of research "power" available. Mike

Sounds like a very good idea.Old maps are one of the best tools for researching and locating new sites. It could help some of us learn how to do the map overlays and gps cordinates .I am sure it would be quite busy now with the cold weather many of us are dealing with and the need for researching new sites for spring.I think Guvner is a wealth of knowledge on the use and research of old and new maps alike.Maybe we could get him to actually contribute some of his ideas and and musty old mapping he has stashed away  Count me as a yes vote,Ray.

I would be very happy to have that resource here.

I have a few for florida that I will be happy to scan and share if it helps! Ghost towns and plat maps for the early 1800's

Recently I have acquired legal access to the Sanborn map collection, but just for the State in which I reside. I can use my local library ID and log right into Sanborn. For those of you who do not know, Sanborn made maps as early as 1890, in my state maybe earlier in yours, and they were for fire insurance purposes. They are about as precise as they could be for that period of time.

Enter Google Earth. I suspect a lot of us have played with that. Look into the help section of GE and find out how to do an overlay. I found a school built in 1890 and saw where it was printed on the Sanborn map. I did the overlay function and moved it right into place on the GE. The overlay process allows you to use a 'slider' button and make the overlay opaque or you can make it totally transparent. That allows you to perfectly line up streets then and now, and then print the overlay map with just enough transparency to place, the school in this situation, right where it was in 1890 on a modern map. I did that yesterday and discovered a school that was built in 1890 is long gone, but the property it was on, appears to be totally open. I need to now go and find who owns the property and gain permission to hunt there.

On the other hand I did the same thing on another school in an adjacent town, and GE with the Sanborn overlay, shows that where the school was is now totally covered with ashphalt. A little more looking at the GE map suggests some areas close to the school that are now accesible that might have been a route to and from the school and maybe a playground area.

Yeah! I vote for a maps section. I love doing the research during this time of year and when the weather changes I'll start with a bunch of new places to try to hunt. Jim

The Maps Forum is now up in the class room forums.
Thanks for all the support.

The hobby needs Maps 101, the factories dont educate us on their machines enough to keep us happy, we have to learn everything on our own. Learning from each other is all we have.I vote yes

Sounds like a good idea to me!
