Had some good success with the DD coil on the GTI.

I took the GTI with the 5x10 Scorcher on yesterday. I hit my favourite spot which has been very lean for finds this year. It's a farmers market site that is only a 15 min walk from home. Over the last 9 months I've only been finding between $1 and $5 after each market, so It's hardly worth doing. There are about 30 store holders and about 5000 folk that frequent this site twice monthly.
I've been interested in seeing what the DD coil can do and have been fairly impressed the target information that you can get out of it while still on the fly. The width of each signal for given notch areas is the key here. I've been having some good success at telling our $1 and $2 coins from screw caps (which are in the same area of disc, as well as in pull tab range in which our 10c coins sit as well as the 5c pieces to a lesser extent. I pulled up 32 targets in total. 25 of them were coins and 7 were junk. 7 10c pieces verses 3 pull tabs, which both come in around 4.5. One of those pull tabs I suspected of being one, but recovered it all the same, just to confirm it. The total for the hunt was $23.91, which is way above what I've been doing lately and it only took 2.5 hours, which is about an hour shorter than what I hunt on this site normally.
I'm not going to say that the Scorcher coil is way better than the imaging coil as yet, as it's way too early to tell as yet, but the early signs are looking promising. it'll take a lot more consistent performances before I can decide that.
One other major advantage has been the weight. With the scorcher coil on and the battery pack hip mounted, the 1500 weighs only 1.4kgs (3.1 pounds)! It's almost as light as the Ace and relatively well balanced; unlike when you have the imaging coil on with the battery pack off. I'll see if I can get an after market cable to hook up the battery pack so that I have a more comfortably mounted battery pack.

hello mike i only hear good things about that coil (5 x 10 scorcher ) and sounds like a winner too me i have yet too get a extra coil for my gti 2500 but im sure i will happy hunting !

Good job Mick sounds like your having fun with that gti1500 have you try ed looking for gold rings at that spot ??? with the amount of people going through there it sounds like it might be a good idea.

Mick,

good to read your report! I have a 1500 coming to me and will order the 5x10 next week, as I like to use a DD more than a concentric in my soil. I hope to give my opinion as well in a few weeks.

I don't usually focus on rings. I have found a couple of pre-decimals there though. It had half a dozen old houses there pre 1900's. As I recover 5 and 10c pieces, I'm sure that if a gold ring was there, I would have recovered it. I did find a nice small silver ring there 12 months back though. Across the road from there, I recovered a 5 gram 18 carrot gold ring though. That was about 3 months ago and was the result of a specific request. The ring went back to a very thankful owner. I found out later that he had been though a really rough patch as his young daughter had a major bout with leukemia. The local community had raised funds for the family to help them along. When I heard about that, I was so glad that I could help out by finding his wedding band.

good job Mick it"s always nice to help someone out i"v only been asked to look for rings 4 times & have only found one witch was silver but i have found quite a few sets of keys for grateful owners.

Good luck with the GTI Eric.
Treat as you would when learning a new sort of detector. I came unstuck with mine as I must have tried to think as if I had an Ace in my hands. They seem so similar, but for some unexplained reason, I couldn't get along with it. It took me about 60 hours before I really came to like it. I see other folk go through the same learning adjustment. Uncle Willy said that folks that treat it like the Ace, seem to have this hang up.
It's a great machine when you get to know it. Centering the target when imaging is really important. If you get it wrong, then the imaging will be off. You can use either the intensity meter (which takes a fair amount of concentration) or a couple of other tips is, to use the depth meter. The shallowest reading is when the target is centered or you can detune it just to confirm that you have centered a target, then re-engage the imaging for a correct size reading. Listen to how long the beep is as well. This is a great feature which seems better on the DD coil and it really tells you a lot about a target. If you tie the length of the beep to where the ID cursor is, then you have a great amount of target info at your fingertips.
I hope that you have many enjoyable hours with it.
All the best.

Yeah you can't get sloppy with a GTI. Correct centering of the target is crucial and that's where a lot of folks screw up. Once you get it down you've got one deadly machine. And moving off the target, pressing pinpoint, and moving back over the target to pinpoint it and image it is also crucial. GTI's are a little tricky compared to other detectors.
