Had to walk through some IL snow to get to the Barber shop...but it was OPEN

a pretty safe bet:bouncy: If I get another short hunt or 2 in...great...but if not...I am satisfied. I just know I'll squeeze in one more hunt though...even if I have to clear off an area with a shovel.:clapping:

start having the success you want...and it's just a matter of time. For now...I'd just dig the iffy hits that repeat from most directions...and sooner or later you'll be rewarded with a sweet coin. You'll then remember what it sounded like...and be ready for another one. There are no shortcuts no matter what anyone tells you. Just trial and error...and familiarizing yourself with the machine. The explorers are fantastic to people who take the time to learn the language they speak. It doesn't matter whether you hunt all metal/ferrous or conductive/iron mask...or what settings you use. Taking the time to figure out what the machine is saying to you is the key. :thumbup:Take care...and good luck hunting

I hope you can get another hunt or 2 in...or like you said...maybe a road trip is in order:detecting:
We only got a couple of inches here...so I hope it goes away. Take care...and good luck on your next hunt.

Awesome finds bud, greay job!!!! I hope some nice weather goes your way so you can find that shady seated!!!

3 barbers & 2 IH's. Surely a good day. Funny thing I always think of you when I get a faint signal, "It's a Bryce!" "It's a Bryce!" You were talking like the season was over but you know that little boy inside you doesn't want it to end and you seized the moment. keep pushing it you never know when it will end. I was out today for 5 hours and it was 55

Nice going Bryce.:clapping: Glad that you were able to brave the elements and get out. Nice collection of barbers buddy. I have yet to get more than one barber in an outing. Maybe I will move to IL. Got out yesterday for a few hours and hunted this old world war II housing neighborhood and only managed to get a 44 merc and eight wheaties. This place has potential for some silver, but there is a lot of crap in the ground not to mention a ton of shallow clad to get through. Any advice? I thought about trying a smaller coil. Again, great finds Bryce and I hope you are able to get out again real soon. HH.

the little kid....actually the STUBBORN little boy will come out in me...and I'll squeeze in anothjer hunt.:clapping: Take care King...and enjoy those warm temps you have:thumbup:

have a great site to hunt. I would definately put on a small coil. I love the 6" Excelerator..but there's a lot of good small coils out there. Put on a littler critter....and just creep along. You'll be able to "see" right through the clad and get to the good stuff.
Take care my friend...and good luck popping out some goodies amongst the trash.

Well, Bryce...

Nice going as usual!

My old hunting buddy used to go out in the early winter with his brother in law. This was back in the early to mid '70's. They would take a snow shovel, a hatchet and a 5lb hand sledge.

On one occasion, they had cleared out a nice area to hunt, but of course, the ground was frozen solid. I know of nothing more resistant to dig than frozen black dirt. Anyway my friend got a good signal and scribed a small square over the target. Then they put the blade end of the hatchet over the line and drove it into the ground, tapering the frozen plug toward the center of the square. They really had to hammer hard to get through the ground. When he recovered the target (s) he had two neatly cut pieces of a nice Barber half in his hands. The blasted ground was so hard, they couldn't tell the difference between cutting through that or a piece of coin silver! (The pleasures of winter hunting in Minnesota!)

I don't think he does this anymore!!

Now that is an obsessed MD. heehee

You can't complain about them finds buddy. Congrats on getting 3 Barber Dimes and 2 more Injuns for your year end totals! It would have been pretty sweet to pull a Seated Dime but heck, I'll take a '92 Barber any day. I'm happy your hunt went well and you got some nice Oldies again Bryce. Hope you get out again and dig a few more Goodies and until then, Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.

What a great story. I am still learning the SE so I haven't been able to pick out those iffy signals that might be a coin, but I'm learning. The pre 1900 area that I have been hunting is filled with signals and I have had allot that seemed OK ( Good one way but blanking another ). I have dug several of these only to find a rusty nail. Any suggestions is my sensitivity set to hi 18-20 or is this common?

The rusty nails can be discovered by hitting it from different directions. It might sound good one way but when you try it another it sounds awful. Going over it from many ways will tell it's bogus. Now if you're hitting this signal froma couple different angles and it sounds good then dig it! I run my sensitivity at 27 auto. U prob can run it higher in auto.

As a rule of thumb...unless I am extremely bored...or have just dug a coin in iron close by....I always make sure the signal repeats from at least two of four directions. There is the extreme case where the signal may just hit in one spot only...but if the sound is sweet enough I'll give it a shot...but knowing full good and well before I dig...that's it's a crap shoot at best.
Here's a copy of a response from below that also kind of explains how I try and decide whether or not I think it is a coin...or iron falsing.
I don't truly know it is a coin...and nobody could know that unless they can see into the ground. I do listen for one thing though that I feel gives it a chance of being a coin...and therefore taking a chance and digging it. That one thing is a MULTI tone warble...and not just a one dimensional sound or tone which indicates to me that it's falsing off of iron. I don't know how to explain it...and you just have to hear it and train your ears to listen for it. Is it fail proof?...no...but it has greatly cut down on the iron I dig. Do I still dig some iron?...YES...but many times I pop out a silver or injun hidin' in there with the iron.
Most of the iron falsing I run accross is a mono tone high pitch with only a slight warble...and I usually know I'm taking a chance on an iffy hit before I dig it. Many times when a coin is hiding in there though...I will get a more multi toned warble...and it waill last a little longer than the sound does when it is just deep iron mimicking a coin.
I consider either of those hits an "iffy" one...but I feel the multi tone warble I'm talking about has a much better chance of being a coin as does the other single toned sound I'm talking about. If it repeats in two of 4 different directional sweeps...then I'm diggin.

COLD and NASTY here today...so I hope I even get the chance to hunt at least one more time...but we'll see. Too many days in a row of this stuff...and the ground will freeze and lock up on me:thumbdown:
Take care buddy...the bad stuff is closing in on us.:stars:

some extreme...hardcore hunting. I'll tell you what though...after being cooped up all winter....I could see myself getting that same itch to hunt:bouncy:

I appreciate your response...and hopefully I can squeeze in one more hunt. The bad weather is here to stay now though...so we'll see what happens.
