found a gold ring today.used my Garrett ace 250 for a month and found lots of new and old coins, but today a gold ring was dug up.cant describe how i felt.I'm sure you know when this happens.the hard task is finding out how old the ring is.and its history.

Hey Topman,

Congrats on the ring - you're making me drool. How about a picture (or at least a description)?

hi,cant do pic as wife has gone to a school reunion with my camera lol.the ring is a signet ring{heavy} with a b going through it on top and a coat of arms.the stamp says 18 .plus an anquer and a crown plus an x .any ideas

It's from England. 18 carat gold. Made in Birmingham. The x is a date code. You can look it up on the internet to figure out the year. They change the stye of the letter every time they come to a letter again. English hallmarks contain a lot of information. If you want to know the history of a ring you couldn't have found an easier one to start with. There are also resources on the web to research coats of arms. Sounds like a beauty of a ring. You MUST post a photo when you get your camera.

hi chris, tried to upload pic of ring on two comps.just says failed.still trying to work out why.its a jpeg and its only 410kb.any ideas.

Maybe there's a temporary glitch on the forum. Happens from time to time.

Make sure the image isn't open in your photo viewer or by any other program too. Also make sure the file is where your pointing the uploader too. The entire image and no a shortcut. Did you get an error message?

Chris

hi know,i copied the image to desktop, then uploaded from there,it tries to upload then says failed to load file, please try again.i have checked the size and format are OK.and tried to upload from another comp.prob as you say a glitch.will try again tom.

Try moving the whole file to a directory. Try cropping it down just a bit to make the image size just a bit lower.

Chris

hi chris, just uploaded ring onto facebook ok,so must be this site.will have to try again tom.have cropped and moved file to know avail.these things come to test us.

hi this is the ring i found.i looked on Internet on assay office in Birmingham.the hallmarks show it is made in Birmingham in the 1800s,but the assay office only shows silver stamps not gold.the detail on the front is interesting.a letter b or coat of arms, who knows?anybody help or recognize the detail on the front.

Wow, what a corker of a ring! If I found it, it would be the second or third best item I ever found, and I've dug some pretty good stuff. The silver and gold marks are in the same style for each year or at least that's what I've been told. Find the x and the style of the box it's in and you'll have the year.

Maybe the R stands for Regina or Reg and it's royal. I'm only dreaming for you,

Chris

hi chris, yes its a nice ring.still cant believe i found it.i will def get to the bottom of its past and let you know.the nice thing is,i ain't only found a ring, but its an old one.

I got a nifty 22k gold band with English hallmarks that I quite like. It dated to 1893 if my memory serves me. I scrap my gold but not the old stuff. Don't ever consider scrapping your ring. If you want to sell it, sell it as an antique ring. I'd also have it appraised to see what an expert thinks. It would be super old in the US. Your country has been around for a lot longer so maybe not as rare as it would be over here.

Just out of curiosity, how much does it weigh? If you don't already have a scale, one of your next purchases should be a small digital scale that is accurate to 1/10th gram or 1/10th of a troy ounce. Cost about $15 USD so around 10 pounds for you.

Great find. I'm gald I got to share it with you.

Chris

I think that's a lot of gold. Over 200 dollars worth not that you're going to scrap it, right?

If you have a US nickel you can test your scale. They weigh 5 grams. I looked it up for you. A UK One Pound coin weighs 9.5 grams. Test it out.

Chris

Your ring is awesome! I've recently become interested in antique jewelry, particularly Russian Imperial pieces. These sights may offer some help in determing the age of your ring:

http://www.modernsilver.com/basichallmarks.htm (I know it says "modernsilver", but gold is mentioned in the British section.)

http://www.allexperts.com/el/Jewelry-Gems-Minerals/?sb=0 (Find an expert who specializes in antique British hallmarks and ask away. I've found them all to be extremely helpful.)

Please keep us posted as you learn more.
