Having any luck?

That's what the guy who was watching me for half an hour asked as he approached me. I said not really. (A bit of a fib.) We chatted for 15 minutes and he was fellow detector checking out the guy who was invading his territory. As we chatted I continued to detect and he asked me why when he was merely watching me I was digging so many more targets. I didn't resond but I had puposely slowed down. We talked about how our year was going and he told me about his luck at a recently bulldozed ball field which produced some good silver. I responded it had been so long since I dug a sliver quarter I might not recognize one. (True.) I kind of played the novice (Another fib, but I didn't want to upset him by telling him I would be, and have been, sucking up a great deal of clad from this particular site.) and he began to critique my poor technique. He also said he had worked over that park and that I couldn't expect to find much. He gave me a few better silver site suggestions and told me to keep at it and that my luck would change. We exchanged numbers and I sincerely hope we can hunt together some day. He was awfully nice. (This is how almost every meeting with a fellow detector goes for me.)

As usual I had about two pounds of clad in my pocket at the time and a few other goodies. Got there early and within the first hour I scored two silver dimes. One was a very iffy signal so I switched to true all metal. Penny, size B, 5 inches. I thought wheat cent. Actual. 1947D dime, 7 inches. 15 minutes later got the 1946 dime, 2 inches deep in packed gravel, about 20 feet from the first. A few swings later a nice 925 ring about 4 inches deep. It has been in the ground a while. Another cool find is that medal from the French Culinary Institute in NYC. Also check out that little costume dog charm. Tiny but the GTI found it at 3 inches. Also part of a costume tennis bracelet and a wheat cent which was also deep. The normal wonderful pile of clad.

The two Canadian coins were a mini spill. Both 1974.

Here are a few statistics. Last year I found my 40th piece of silver jewelry on October 2. This year I found it today. A fair bit ahead. I am way ahead of last year (almost 2000 coins) on my clad count too but last August was my best month in 2008 so I will lose some ground next month for sure.

A real good day even though I didn't find an old British copper like ol' Steve did. Since I set out to find more silver earlier this month, I've found four silver dimes and a large cent so maybe there is hope for me in that regard. The gold drought continues and I look forward to that ending. When I do get back into gold mode I'll probably forget about silver coins again.

My goal for the rest of the weekend is 222 coins which will tie the total number of coins I found in July 2008. The weather forecast is working against me.

Another long and windy post. Congratulations if you made it to the end!

Chris

If my new friend stumbles upon this post please don't hold it against me. I am not one to open up to a stranger even about something as insignificant as how many coins I've found that day. Call me and we'll go detecting.

Great finds Chris. I love finding medals that I can research and find out a little bit more about. Nice ring too.

I never set goals for myself like you do, I'm perfectly happy with whatever the winds of luck blow my way.

Nice hunt WTG !!

Can't blame you for not opening up to a fellow hunter. I wouldn't have opened up to him about my finds myself. Who knows, if you had shown your finds to him he might not have been so nice. Can only imagine how you played the rookie card on him. From knowing how great of a hunter you are that would have been interesting to see.

I kinda got lost while I was reading about all your statistics. Had to start over once or twice. I dare say you spend as much time hunting as you do recording your statistics!!!!

Well I think you did damn well Chris.

First you get a few possible silver sites out of a fellow detectorist (who was prying info from you) and then you find your "normal" pile of goodies.

Good days work Mr. Chris!!

Now go find silver in those silver sites!

Don

:detecting: but I can't really blame you for not being as open as you were. I tend to be a bit too open sometimes, but that works in my favour as well because it encourages the other detectorist to open up as well. I've found a few good spots by dong that.
It looks like you had another great hunt Chris. Well done. I had a really good one yesterday, but I was swinging my Explorer, so I can't really comment on it here. I wouldn't have minded having the GTI/ Scorcher coil combination with me though, as my finds would have been even higher than with the Explorer, but one has to rotate detectors sometimes.
Keep shooting for you goals Chris, as they are a good way to keep your interest.
Mick Evans.

I'm out of breath. Nice haul there bud. If I found that much in one day I wouldn't have to hunt the rest of the week. :) Nice job handling the spectator.

Bill

thats a great pile of loot there Chris  hope ya left a few coins for that poor guy you big bully :poke: i tend to talk a bit much when yaking to other detectorists but i never give up my good sites.
