Headphones...any diff.?

Why do people use headphones...to hear 'faint' sounds? So the 'beeps' do not annoy people close by?

Is there something I should look for in headphones? .. phones with volume control? ..Wrap-around? ...Ear buds?

I was going to go to the local electronic store and just get any set ..but I thought I'd ask here first.

What should I look for in Headphones?

Depends upon which detector you have-does it have a volume control? You will get blasted by headphones that don't have a volume control if the detector doesn't have a volume control. On the other hand, the cheap miniature headphones (which I use) won't blast you. They basically serve 3 purposes: to cut battery drain-sometimes almost in half; for high noise locations, and for detectors that have a non-motion allmetal mode to hear very faint signals in that mode. A detector like mine, the Ace, really doesn't require expensive headphones as the signals are on-off digital and can be heard easily. I suppose if someone were to hold down the pinpoint button to search, maybe better headphones would be required. My main reason for using them at all is battery drain.

I just got the ACE 250...( I don't believe it has a volume control )
I want to make sure that non volume-control headphones.. don't 'blast' my ears.
thanks for your comment re: battery drain

Wal-mart has some Koss headphones with a slide volume control. They are around 15 bucks I think. That is what I am using till I can get some high tech headphones for my F75. The Koss work great with the Ace 250.

I posted a similar question on another forum.I'm going to try the earbud style headphones after the spring thaw, one would think they will be more comfortable than the big bulky type that we all use.At least my ears won't sweat.I run a 1350,so I won't need a volume control.

I have weird shaped ear holes. I tried the buds, but they kept falling out. I had a set of Radio Shack Full size phones, but started wearing my Lucky Metal Detecting hat. It is a Boonie style hat. After about a month of taking the phones on and off the phones developed a crack and finally bit the dust. I am going to eventually buy some Good headphones,. For right now the Koss Volume control phones are working.

Hey CJW
These are the Koss I have from Walmart..

Invest in quality headphones for me is a must. Some loss of hearing.
As you age the high and low tones also diminish in your hearing.
The higher the ohms the headphones has the better the quality of the sounds.
I have good ones now but plan on buying the Sunray Pro Golds a Little pricey but worth the investment.
If a person is going to detect may as well get the best of equipment.

That's probably true. The trouble with me is the Texas heat. I can't keep a pair of good ones on for more than 30 minutes. That, plus the fact you don't really need good ones with the Ace causes me to use the small $5 cheapos just to save battery drain. One fact I forgot to mention is that you can still hear someone approaching you-or some THING like a dog approaching with the small pads which deal with the heat very well.

Today I bought headphones without volume control. The salesman said to try them and if the sound was too loud...just return them.
Well....the sound was much too loud. I'll return them tomorrow.

Then I remembered, I have a drawer of.electronic odds 'n ends... I found a pair of Bose ear buds. Although they do not have a volume control, the sound is at a level I can live with.

That being said...I looked at the link you sent re; the Koss at Walmart and I'm going to order those. ( not expensive and with an in-line volume control)

thanks for the link....I appreciate it.

Yeah if you're using the 250 phones with a volume control are a must. If you live where it's hot smaller phones may be the best shot to keep from frying your ears. I have two sets, big ones for cool weather and little ones for hot weather. Garrett puts out some decent phones and they don't cost an arm and a leg.

No Problem my friend. Volume control on the Ace 250 is a must. And it does help on Batteries.

I use a wireless headset sold by Radio Shack, which cost about $65. The headset (just under 2 ounces), and the transmitter (about an ounce) are both rechargeable (the charger is included). There is a volume control on the headset. I don't know how long it will play before recharging, but I've used it for one whole week (about 35 hours total search time), and it was still going strong.

The best part is, there is no cord! If you ever use one, you'll never go back to a corded headset.

By the way, my vehicle cellphone charger can charge both pieces, albeit not at the same time like the base charger.

I started first time using headphones and been using them since. All my detectors back then had threshold hum and quality headphones help discern faint changes and hopefully pick up a whisper from the deep targets. Those slight changes were to hard to discern from the detector speaker itself. It became more evident for the whisper signals when nugget detecting.
Even for strong signals, including single tome detectors, listening carefully on how clean the signal can be is a must for me. Just a slight crackle can speak something.
It's more obvious when the surrounding environment is noisy, traffic, construction equipment, beach, kids & wife.
Plus - allowing me to more carefully listen for a slight threshold, whisper signal changes, and clean or not clean stronger signals.
Minus - can get hot in the summer, makes it harder to hear critters around - but I usually take the dogs with me 99% of the time.
I just don't hunt without headphones and I want quality headphones. I'd feel naked without them.

Wireless sounds like a great idea. I looked at the Radio Shack website and saw the set you got. 65$ They look good..light. I assume they''re comfortable?

Because I'm new to all of this....I decided to start with 2 different ( wired ) sets.
BOSE ear buds....and KOSS Headphones with an ( in-line ) volume control. The volume control is ideal as the set I tried without volume control was just too loud. ( BTW...I'm using them on the ACE 250 )
If I find, like you, that the wires are a hassle...I will definitely try the Radio Shack set you got.

anyway, this is the KOSS set I got today ...almost exactly what zaxfire69 suggested above.

Do you have a part number on that wireless system? I'm tired of cords.
