HELP - anyone know their Indian varieties???

coinnut

New member
A while ago I posted an 1864 Indian head in great shape, that I had found. It later turned out to be the rarer "L" variety. So now my monthly detector meeting is coming around, and I know that I will have to teach everyone how to find this small "L" on the Indian. So I get a real good magnifying glass and locate the "L" and work on how I will instruct the people to find it. As I'm looking over the "L", I can also see the date very clearly. I never took a good look at it before, since it screamed 1864 at me. Well now under the glass, I can very clearly see that the 18 is doubled. Not just a little, but the second 18 is lower than the first. Very easy to see. I have never heard of a double die, at least not in the Redbook. Can anyone with a Breen's or other book, look up and 1864 L Double Die for me??? I think this may be even better than I thought it was when I found the "L". I wish I had a camera that would macro in close enough to see the doubling. It's very clear. Thanks.

Tried to take a picture with macro and a magnifying glass. It's not real good, but you can see the double 1 in it pretty well.

I couldnt find it in my book but there was one I saw on E-Bay for 1500.00

Thanks, just saw it for $1495.00 on E bay, and it was an uncirculate beauty!!! His seems to be a Snow variety #1 FS#1C-006.7, VP-002 (what ever that means:rofl:). So if anyone knows if this is my Snow variety, I would appreciate knowing. Thanks again.

A premium coin for sure, the doubled 18 is VERY clear. Not much info on it when I Googled it and I went through quite a few pages. Great discovery.......

hey! you glued that on! i don't know how you did the double die though!
good find on the good find, coinnut
maybe a scan ,and crop will get close enough for us to see
thats awsome!

Fantastic coin to begin with! Now with the double die it is just awesome! I would have to find a professional coin dealer and take it to him/her. Good luck to you and a very big congrats, Beale.

hi coinnut, you sure did make a good find there. it is indeed a doubled date 1864 L cent. i've only seen one other, and that's been years ago. it's a rare variety. great double find, coinnut. wtg, and congrats! hh,

Thanks Ghost. Seems the more times I look at it, the more interesting it gets:rofl: I think this is it though! If I go out with a buddy detecting tomorrow, before it snows, we'll go back to that site. Last time out, my buddy found a GW button and I got an 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent. The finds are very far and few between, but they have been super so far!! HH.

Terrific find coinnut. With those kind of finds from that site, I still could handle "very far and few between". NICE, NICE recovery. HH jim tn

My friend Dan couldn't make it, so I decided to work an area that was a virgin site I found a couple of years ago. The coins aren't in great condition, but I know no one else has hunted it! So I figured I'd try and work some iron programs I have for my E Trac. It's a nice machine, but I can't get it to do what I need it to do at old cellar holes. This "see through iron" technology needs some work:rofl: It seems there is no good way that I know of that will make the iron not false and sound good. Most of it sounds like nails, but the deep stuff reads good (12-42, 12-46, etc...) Sorry all you E trac lovers, but that's why I don't post much on the E Trac forum. If you say anything negative, you get whacked!!!. So, after 3 hours trying to weed through the iron at this site, I didn't have anything good to show. I decided to venture into an area that I didn't hit hard and was quite a bit away from the yard. Got 2 Large cents in one hole!!! After that nothing, not even shot gun shells!! So a good start for me as far as large coppers go. An 1818 and I think an 1844. HH

hi coinnut, i think you and the etrac are doing well! any day you can get 2 old coppers is a good day, especially with legible dates. keep on gettin' up! i still can't get over the incredible find you made with the rare 1864 L dd. wow! hh,

I MD'ed a cellar hole two weeks ago and got nothing. It was a good location on privite land. The iron trash is always a problem. This place had the log cabin dissembled and taken away. I thought my odds would be better of finding something good.

If I paid that kind of money for a detector, I wouldn't want anybody saying anything negative about it ether.

I got a feeling that 2009 is going to be a good year for me. I am determined to figure out this E Trac as well as really working sites hard. I will be detecting at least weekly (if weather permits), twice a week if I can. I'm mad at myself for not separating my 2008 finds. I had a great year and would have loved to see it on a slide show. Live and learn. This year will be different. I wish everyone great success for the coming year. Be healthy, strong and fulfilled in what you do. HH

Hey George , Huge Congrats on the 1864 L Double Die , OMG , What
a Rare Find :please: :clapping:

2009 is starting off Fantastic , Love the LC's !!!!

Terri

I think that might qualify as a FIND OF A LIFETIME

Hey Terri, you're alive. It was a good find, and in super shape at that. Lucky to find one like that. Sometimes you never know what is going to pop out of the ground. Until that Indian surfaced, it was a boring day. I'm hoping for at least 35 degree weather soon, so I can hunt some more. But not this week. When it gets below 35, the machines don't like it!! Hope all is well and hope the snow melts FAST!!!!!
