Help!! Excal coil separating

Just finished working on a straight shaft and gave the coil a closer inspection and notice it was coming
apart. Does this mean coil is no good? Can i repair it? If saltwater water enters the coil will it damage coil or detector?

I am new to the Excal(used) and have only used 4-5 times and did notice it acting a little funky after coil was emersed in the water it
would also make a loud whining noise if raised over 1 foot off the ground and go back to normal if lowered and swung.

I was thinking maybe epoxy and the bedliner. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks, Epi

Call 1-877-767-6522 fax them those pictures and they will help you. Never seen one do that. Ask for Mary she sure helped me out. I would'nt try to fix that coil until you hear from Minelab. Good luck. Let us know how your situation comes out.

Since it is used the warranty will no longer apply. You can 1: dry it out, use epoxy to repair it and then coat it with 1/2 dozen coats of bedliner spray. If that fails either send it to Minelab and have them attach another $$$$$ or cut it off and put on as WOT I would do the latter

that they didn't put enough epoxy in the coil housing. The bottom should be slightly convex instead of concave. Since it's concave the sides catch on anything the coil comes in contact with. Let it dry then fill it with marine epoxy and several coats of bed liner.

The same thing happened to me twice , each time I sent my Excalibur to the Minelab service dept and they replaced the search coil free of charge, on both occasions it was after my warrantee had expired. I would not mess with it as the damage has been done , send the machine in and see what they say.

The wires are completely set in epoxy, so the plastic cover pulling away should not be causing the issue you described.

1. Rinse it out with warm soap and water 2. Rinse with water. 3. Dry it out with a fan. 4. Give it a quick rinse in wax and grease remover 5. Dry it out again. 6. Fill it with epoxy and clamp closed until dry. Problem solved!

To help avoid this problem happening again you should always use a search coil cover especially in rocky areas. Most peoples advice to you is to try and gerry rig the split coil which is fine if you like that sort of thing but the bottom of search coil should not split like that and more than likely Minelab will replace the search coil. I hear the turnaround time for repairs at Minelab has improved.

My friend's Excal with 8" BBS coil was doing the same thing, and the seams were splitting in several places due to excessive wear not using a coil cover. I cleaned it with water, let it dry, and then did about 8 or 10 coats of spray on bed liner spaced several hours apart in the hot sun to make sure each coat hardened well before the next one (a must!). The coil is filled with epoxy so you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks, for all the sugestions. I will try to repair with epoxy and the spray on bed liner. But maybe it's time to start looking for coils and connectors.
It would be nice to be able to swap coils.
