HELP finding coil cable!

Bling

New member
i like many others have a like new Tornado coil with weather cracked coil cable..Minelab wont fix them, only sell you a new coil.i want to splice the coil cable 6" above the coil but cant find the right 4 wire cable.i need 7' anyone have any for sale or know where i can buy it? thanks

I heard there was a bad batch of Minelab coils that had coil cable insulation that would rot and break apart like that.

Check out the Belden 9418 cable, should be close except maybe the color of wires.
i see its shielded...mine is not.

Bling, would a connector work instead of a splice and then connect with an extension cord to hip mount? Ron

There are a lot of adaquate cables you could use and they don't need the fat jacket that Minelab uses. Just make sure the wire is stranded and wire gauge is the same.
For the remaining original pigtail that will come from the coil, I would heatshrink the entire length including under the strain relief if you can get it in there.
That will hold the substandard cable from falling apart in the future. You could splice or use connectors but I wouldn't trust it to be waterproof.

If this happened to an automobile there would be a recall and the customer would be made whole.
I won't forget how Minelab treated its customers in this regard!

i see no reason for a connector..iv spliced many and waterproof the splice by useing shrink tubeing ,Silicone Seal and Liquid tape.my problem is finding the right wire...i think iv found one real close.i ordered 7' yesterday. http://www.cableorganizer.com/igus/pvc-power-cables/ we will see. thanks to all for there ideas.

I have an eight inch Tornado that has done the same thing. It is so bad that it would require splicing at both the coil and the pod strain relief. I am going to attempt the repair just as you have suggested using double wall adhesive heat shrink and flowable silicone such as is used for sealing auto windsheilds leaks.

My guess is the remaining cable on your coil will continue to crack, I plan to replace all but a few inches on both ends and reinforce the stubs with double wall heat shrink.

Thanks for the tip on the wire.

Yea, I would heat shrink the remaing last bit of coil cable near the coil that you can't remove. Shrink that hole area to hold the old cable together so it won't fall apart in the future. If it breaks apart down to the base of the coil then it's pretty much game over unless you do some major surgery.

Bling let us know how that cable works for you..I had seen that place but wanted black instead.....

Well I found this company that looks promising. http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Overview/Catalog/Wiring_Solutions/Flexible_Portable_Cord_%28Multiconductor_Cables%29/Insulation_Type_-_SJEOOW

Can be ordered in lengths of 20' is black, awg 18-4 conductor and sound likes it is fit for purpose:

Features

TPE cord (thermoplastic-elastomer) 105

Bling,

I think your right, probably about the same. I am trying to find electrical cord searching for metric sizes. Everything in 4 conductor unsheilded AWG seems to be 8 to 10 mm in total OD. Which as we know gives us problems with connectors for the Sovereign and end caps for the Excalibur.

the strain reliefe can be trimmed back to fit the MM size but the cable clamp on the 5 pin connector will be small..i found the perfict OD cable today at Home Depot.....only problem it was 3 wire :sadwalk:

well i ordered 7' of the cable and it works great ! it is a bit larger OD than the stock so i spliced it in 2 places 6" above the coil and 6" below the box connector...shrink tubing each wire and silicone seal and final was 3 coats of liquid rubber. $20 was better than throwing a good coil away. took it to the beach yesterday and it worked great ! another thing the wire color inside is 3 black 1 yellow. just dont get them on wrong and you are good to go.

I took a different approach.

1. I stripped the outer jacket completely and exposed the four wires

2. For reinforcement I double adhesive shrink wrapped at both the coil and control pod for about 4 inches

3. I preplaced cut to length standard 3/8" shrink wrap and 6 inch lengths of adhesive shrink wrap over the wires prior to soldering, soldered and then shrink wrapped the four wires individually

4. Shrunk the long lengths of standard wrap, then slid the 6 inch adhesive shrink wrap over the existing shrink wrap joints and shrank to seal the joints

5. Smoothed flowable silicone over each outer jacket splice

Let the silcone dry for 24 hours and then used in water to the chest, no issues..so far.
