Help with the WOT coil

Hello All, I purchased a wot coil from off of ebay last year and really never did use it until now. I decided to take it out in one of our large parks here in Louisville that has very little trash in the middle of the great lawn area. The coil falses every time it is bumped on the side of the cord. I can run the sensitivity up to about 18-20 and it stay relatively quite. When I try to run the sensitivity up, it get very noise. For those that use a wot, does this sound right? It falses so much, I hate to use it and running the sensitivity so low, all I'm finding is shallower coins. Do I need to get another wot? All and any help greatly appreciated! Thanks, EddieB

I don't have the WOT coil, but what bothers me is [Quote} "The coil falses every time it is bumped on the side of the cord."
None of my machines have enough slack in the cord to allow movement. In fact, my machines with the cord external from the shaft (non-minelab), I run the cord straight up the lower shaft using Velcro, then wrap the cord on the next shaft section up.
Allowing the cord to flop around in the coil magnetic flux field I would think is not desirable during the swing.

Hello Tab-nabit, I quess I phrase the problem improperly. What I mean is: when the coil is bumped,(like hitting a stubble of grass), especially the side of the coil that has the wire,(cord), coming out of the coil. Thanks Tab-nabit!! EddieB

Hitting a stubble of grass - I've had bumping a rock or tree trunk or similar cause a signal - but the grass itself
Just my first thought:
- check for any debris between the coil and coil cover.
- make sure the coil wire itself is not loose to flop movement
- coil wire connections clean and properly secured
- don't run the machine sensitivity to be over driven for the conditions
- check the hardware that secures the coil to the shaft
- submerge coil in sink of water / bubbles may be a coil fracture and possible entrance of water and/or debris
Just a few starter thoughts that come to mind. If problems persist, don't rule the possibility of a bad coil, If you have another coil, I would try it for a comparison. I'm sure others have some ideas.

I have the WOT coil on my ExpII and it works well even with the sensitivity range between 18-20. I use it mostly at the salty beach and it still finds stuff at 8"+ in the salty wet sand with a sens of 20. I think on dry I can push it up to 24-26 but generally I run it around 22 and below. Do you run any advanced settings such as Deep or Fast recovery? I found that I run more stable with the WOT if I turn off Deep or Fast recovery.

First off, I recommend setting the machine to the factory settings and playing with it from there. The WOT coil is sensitive and can pull them deep but don't expect 15"+ even if the soil is clean of interference such as iron. For me the coil size is more about ground coverage than absolute depth.

Hello Keith, Thanks, for your advice. I run in iron mask with both deep and fast off. My big problem with it is that it falses everytime it is bumped. I know the SE stock coil is like that with most of the coils. Does your act like this? Thanks, EddieB

i have a wot coil also for my explorer. i need to turn the sens. down in order for it to stop falseing. sometimes evening below 18. try it

Eddie B have you removed the coil cover ?
Occasionally black sand builds up between the bottom of the coil and the coil cover,
Loose dry black sand can cause a lot of instability when it builds up between a coil and its cover.

Just a thought.

hello Tab-nabit, It apparently is ok, it's just me. I know by being larger, it's going to pick up more targets within the magnetic field, and in a noisy area that is confusing for me. Thanks for the help. HH EddieB
