Here's another odd MD run in. (Long and possibly boring.)

Ever have one of those mornings? I did today. Last night I planned out my morning and laid out everything that I was going to need to get my errands done. I knew of a sweet little park right near where I was going and decided that I could also spare and hour or so to detect. I got up early, early, early which was good because my appointments were at 9:00 and 9:45. It had rained and I knew I would be getting dirty but neither of these appointments were dependant on my appearance so I moved my hunt up to first thing in the morning. I also had to stop at Wal-Mart to return an item which I bought for myself and later received as a gift. The item cost just over 100 bucks and my errands were going to cost me about 105 so I didn't grab any more cash. All neat and tidy right?

I had driven 15 miles and looked over at my front seat and noticed of course I forgot the item to return. No problem, I could stop at an ATM. I detected for 1.5 hours and found a boat load of quarters. 57 coins and 28 were quarters. Nothing else and no picture. I then headed to the bank and found that I had also left my wallet home and now I did not have the time to go home and return. I thought for a second and remembered a friend who is always borrowing money from me who lived a few blocks away. I went and banged on his door and told him I needed 100 bucks. He hemmed and hawed and after I reminded him about the thousands of dollars I have loaned him over the years he coughed it up. I went to appointment one and then headed to the county building. I never thought about the pocketful of filthy coins and the security metal detector I would have to pass through. I emptied my pockets and filled the security guards tray with keys, the dirty coins, my Pro-Pointer, and a tiny little pen knife. He gave me a long look and called for his supervisor. This took a while. I asked what the problem was and he said I had a weapon and some suspicious items. The guy in front of me also had a larger knife which the guard put in a drawer until the guy came back for it so I asked what was suspicious. He wouldn't answer but he was giving my Pro-Pointer a good look. I told him what it was and offered to demonstrate and he told me to please have a seat and wait. When the supervisor got there he said, the guy was just out metal detecting, let him go. The guard then told me he thought the Pro-Pointer might be a stun weapon. The supervisor wanted to talk detecting but I was now late. I told him to wait a few minutes and we could chat. Luckily I had stapled my license to the application the night before so I had it with me. When I returned he asked to see my coins again. I showed him everything, which I almost never do. He stacked and counted it (almost 10 bucks) and asked how long I was at it. I told him and he was incredulous. He said if he found a few dollars in three or four hours he was having a banner day. He told me some of his sites. I have been to them all and they are good producers. He then asked where I was hunting and I told him. I never do that. He asked for a demonstration so off we walked to a different park right near the county building. I showed him my technique and he was impressed with both the 2500 and the Pro-Pointer. People were assembling to watch the uniformed officer standing over grubby old me and two cops came over to watch too. I dug three coins and let him swing it a few times then told him I had to go. He thanked me for the tips and gave me his number. I headed to the grocery store where I had just enough money left to get a few of the items I needed.

FWIW this all happened in the county where I was harassed by an officer a year ago. I was detecting right across the street from the building where that officer works. I had a uniformed deputy and two beat cops watching me and all three said that they could not tell I had disturbed the grass except where it was matted down by my knee. I was really hoping he would walk by.

My pal has always paid me back but sometimes it took him months. I am trying to figure out how long I'll drag out returning his hundred. Maybe I'll pay him in dirty quarters.

Very interesting day. Seems like you always have runins with the law. ( in good and bad ways);)

i always enjoy your stories, boring as they may be, they are always interesting. it sounds like your spots always replenish themselves, do you hunt tot lots or do you tend to hunt the park ? probably both, do you live in a heavily populated area? how frequently do you hunt the same spot? do you hunt the sport fields? what is your average hunt like in type of location? just trying to pick your brain.

Are you calling me boring?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

I live in a pretty rural community. My territory is roughly a circle with a radius of 50 miles from my apartment. When I travel more than 20 miles one way I always like to hunt for at least 3 hours. Within 20 miles usually less. I have about 100 sites that I rotate between. I have not been to at least half in over a year. As a winter project I'm going to make a chart and figure out where to start next spring. If I like a site I return often. You might recall this August I found a lot of silver dimes. Most came from one site that I probably hit 5 or 6 times. My first really good site is pretty cleaned out but I can still get a few coins there. It is very close to my house and I've taken over 2000 coins from there. Two years ago I hit it 20 times in one month and found 1200 plus coins, one silver dime, a big gold ring and a whole lot more. My average hunt this year is just over 2 1/2 hours. I strongly prefer hunting in grass anywhere where people play. I almost never grid a site unless I know it is heavily detected. Less than 5 percent of my finds are recent drops. I think all sites replenish themselves but it really takes a long time. I did a bark chip area last year and found 113 coins. One year later I went back and got 17 coins. I did a pretty thorough grid too.

I am a much better detector this year than I was last year. I keep getting better and faster with practice. I can pinpoint using my big coil with deadly precision now where two months ago I couldn't. That means some of those old "hunted out" sites are great when I return to pick up everything I missed way back when.

Hope I answered your question. Always enjoy your posts too.

I like cops. I hang out with a bunch. In my county I'm pretty golden. My incident last year is still a bad memory. Yesterday was a sweet bit of redemption.

I do have a lot of weird MD anecdotes probably because I detect a lot. I usually try to avoid detecting anywhere where there is a large crowd too.

I might be a little shady but when I tresure hunt I am a boy scout.

i would never call you boring..... thanks for the answers. i have often wondered how and what method you use to detect.
