With the AT series still selling I doubt the Apex will ever be made waterproof in the near future.

If there are no programming issues, wouldn't ever need an update. Doubt if Garrett would release something with programming issues, or an unfinished product.
To make the Apex waterproof and submersible, the battery would have to be housed in a completely sealed control box.

The fact that it is not software updatable is a game changer for me! The Equinox for example had two very useful updates during the first year!
