Hey Bryce-What Are the Chances?

RLOH

Well-known member
Bryce, you are one of the true expert SE users on this forum and I along with many other readers respect and look forward to your posts/advice. What are the chances of you trying an Etrac? I know it has crossed your mind to give one a go and if you took this intriguing detector to some of your hard hit sites, it would make my decision easier on whether to buy or not. I just read your 2008 finds and if you could squeeze some more coins out of these places with an Etrac, we all could call this detector the "real deal". This scenario would make for some exciting and informative reading. I'm not trying to place undue pressure on you and your abilities, but I wish someone would loan you an Etrac for a month or two in the spring. R.L.

I have the highest regard for Bryce's abilities and skills when it comes to knowing what the Explorer is telling him and have no doubt that given the time he has on the Explorer that he could really put the E-trac through its paces at the parks he has pounded. But as many have posted, using a detector and mastering a detector are two different things and getting to the level of understanding that Bryce has with his Explorer would take anyone time to reach.

If you look at posts on the E-Trac forum here on Find Mall or some of the forums in the U.K., you will see some very seasoned hunters with years of Explorer experience that have switched to the E-Trac and after some learning time, have made some really amazing finds on a consistent basis - mostly at heavily hammered sites that they have been through already. Take a look at some of the things Tony Hunt has posted . . . . .

So, I think that while waiting to see how Bryce does once he gets and then has mastered the E-Trac will show you that it does / does not perform better in the types of sites he hunts in his specific area of the country, there have been a number of posts made already by people have done the very tests you are asking Bryce to conduct at other sites and at other locations around the world.

As I and others have said, the E-Trac is not the panecea some have wanted Minelab to produce; i.e., no one at Minelab ever claimed it gave inches more depth and way more accuracy on target ID. As a matter of fact, there may be some applications where the Explorer is a better choice but if you are planning to make your purchase decision on one person's comparision to a detector they are in essence "one with", you might find that the data you want has already been posted.

Andy, I understand what you are saying. I have read every post on the Etrac forum and I am still confused. I see many Etracs for sales. Yes, I do realize that most are sold quickly after the new user is comparing them to their old Explorers and there is no initial succcess with them. I have been tempted to try one, but the 1500.00 scares me. I was not trying to start any controversy, but just trying to see if a respected , successful Explorer user might be contemplating giving a new detector a try. I have no idea if Bryce wants to try, can afford to try, or is willing to try an Etrac. I mentioned him because of his hunting style and places he hunts. I would love to see an Etrac in either Bryce or Jame's hands in some of their old hunting spots. R.L.

Unless you are hunting old parks in central Illinos looking for coins, not sure what Bryce's perspective would tell you that a number of Explorer users that have made the switch, spent time learning the E-Trac and then posting their results won't tell you. To be honest, I have a hard time switching to a new detector for my personal use; i.e., not just testing it, if I am doing well and am very familair with it. As many have stated, during the learning curve you can be assured that you will find less until you get the same level of comfort that you had with your previous detector.

Since the performance can vary from area to area and depending on the type of hunting you do, I would try to find someone in your area looking for the type of stuff you do to either get their perspective or try the detector. Learning the nuances on any machine - and the E-Trac has been no exception - is what will take time. I am still picking up tricks when I go out and I have been playing with the E-Trac in various iterations for a year now. I have been picking up a good deal of tips in working with some relic hunter friends locally (SC & GA) which are probably of more use to me than tricks picked up from some of the UK boys or even the coin hunters in the midwest that have done well with it . . . . . different areas, different challenges, different targets . . .

Your point about wanting to hear from the recognized experts on this forum is well taken . . . . but look at those that are doing well with and and see what they an share (positive and negative) and for those you see for sale, ask how long they owned it and how much time they had in the field . . . . on several new detectors, I have been ready to dump it before spending the time to see what it could really do.

Your remark was really uncalled for and I normally wouldn't say anything, but our forum is not meant for people like you to be bad mouthing anyone or the sponsors either for that matter. Shame on you!!!!:ban: Surely you have more important things to do, but then again there has to be one in every crowd. Find another forum if you want to bad mouth people.

first off....I'm flattered... and if I have gained the respect of you and some others on the forum because of my honesty when stating advice or opinions...I truly appreciate it.

To be honest...the thought has crossed my mind to "mess" with an E-trac at many of my beat up parks next season...just for the very reason you stated....to see if I could pop a few more deepies out that I missed with my SE.

I have no doubt that there are still some deepies there...because nobody gets them all. At least I don't anyway.
It's always fun to go back to a pounded park and take on the challenge of trying to pop out "just one more". Even more of a challenge when you know that you and a zillion other hunters have already been there time and time again over the last many years.

That's what it's all about for me anyway....a challenge. I can't think of any other hobby where a person can take on something head on....while enjoying peace and solace all at the same time.

I would love to try an E-trac for a few months....and see what I could do with it at my beat up parks....but I can't spend $1500 to do so. I am also having way too much fun with my SE right now....and it's because I have spent a gazillion hours in the field familiarizing myself with it....and what it does.

For me to think I could take an E-trac out of the box...take it to my beat up parks...and instantly dig up a few silver coins I missed with my SE...would probably be wishful thinking on my part. It would be wonderful if it happened that way...but then I wouldn't want to return it to whoever sent me one:crylol:
If I had one at my disposal...didn't have to worry about sending it back at any specific time frame...and could use it...experiment with it...put it through the paces...etc....that would be great. If I was able to put a ton of hours on one...familiarize myself with it somewhat...learn it's quirks, etc....I would then possibly be able to give you an honest assessment as to whether or not I felt it was the new machine for me...and could steal some hunt time from my faithful SE.

I know one thing though....I would go into it thinking of it as just that...a "new" machine. I would not expect it to "out perform" my SE...or even perform like my SE...because it isn't an explorer. I would only care if I could thoroughly put it through the paces like I want to...tinker with some settings.... pound some ground with it...and make it "find" stuff for me that I missed with my SE. The only way for me to know that would be for me to put many, many hours on one. Even then though...to be honest...and that's the only way I know to be...I still wouldn't base buying one or not buying one just on what I reported. I am but one person...and while I am honored...and truly appreciate the respect from everyone....I would base my final decision on what a group of experienced hunters reported as a whole...instead of just me.

Take care buddy...and again...I''m honored...and I truly appreciate the respect you have given me. Good luck in '09.
Right now it's 3 degrees here...and the windchill is supposed to be -20 in the morning. yippee:stars:

I still thumb through some of those old articles to help me understand a metal detector before or after a purchase.I'm sure a lot of other hunter's use these field test for their references. It s great to be able to network with such people. As for Kal he is new and maybe he is confused so to clear things up, Andy is one of the best writer's we have in this hobby for equipment use and other general information with metal detecting so be nice to this guy he deserves your respect.Bryce is one of the best Explorer user's around (or lucky by his critics) period. Kal if you were being smart I guess I have no other chose but to call you out.My Radio Shack vs your Minelab and loser leaves town.
