Hey you guys in the Sunshine State

Mary and I are thinking about coming down to your fair state for maybe a month, before spring. We are thinking about the Gulf coast and below Tampa. She wants to be as near as possible to the water, like walk to the beach. I will be bringing two of my kayaks, metal detector, Honda Helix, scuba gear-if I have room and all the tech toys I can get in my GMC Terrain.

I don't want to spend over $5-600 a week on this place and I have to bring two cats. Heck, I really don't want to spend that much either :D I told Mary that we could have them put down and mounted but ....well  over my dead body.

It also has to be in a safe area.

Do any of you have any suggestions??

I would recommend looking in the South Venice, Englewood area. Believe it or not, those areas are still somewhat "old Florida" and you may get lucky and find something in that area that will fit the bill. The 2 cats will be the second hurdle but you may get lucky. I'd recommend you do it asap as we are in "season" right now and most everything may already be filled. Bradenton might be a good place to look as well.

down there that I have found on the web but it is tough to tell if they are in safe areas. Cripe, I have read of people renting private residences and they were in the dang ghetto. Lots of bad places in Florida. I don't need a swimming pool but don't want to worry about muggings and break ins either.

I have spent vacations in Florida and had no problem but things have changed down there. I prefer the northern part for myself but the weather is so unpredictable :(

Houses are dirt cheap down there right now, even in very nice areas. Sarasota area is nice, but neighboring Bradenton has it's rough areas. You need to talk to some real estate agents who do rentals.
