Hi, I have not been detecting for years now, but in the 80's I purchased a Garrett Groundhog new and really enjoyed it. Lots of good finds etc. I am finding the "bug" is coming back and I am wondering. Is my old Garrett Groundhog still a good dectector to use or should I upgrade to a AT Pro or something?? Is it worth upgrading? I am hoping some of you might have started with a groundhog and have upgraded to the new AT pro so you can tell me about it. I am really thinking I should upgrade but have until spring to decide. Thank you in advance for your help. Also if this has been addressed on this forum already please send me the link.
 
I did find a Garrett comparison chart and am thinking I would be more interested in the AT Max than the pro. But still am wondering how it would compare to my old groundhog. I know there is lots more "bells and whistles" on the max.
 
I didn't have a Groundhog, but had a friend who did. Just about any of the modern detectors are mush better. A low cost Garret ACE or Minelab Go-Find with modern technology will out perform it. An AT Pro is a big jump in technology and capability. Groundhogs were pretty good detectors in their day but now are for the most part obsolete (since early 1980's). It's pretty much an all-metal VLF so maybe it would still be useful in a field where you're digging everything or at the beach for the same reason? Most parks and other common hunting areas will be pretty tough to hunt because of all the nails, screws and other such stuff. The TR discrimination is has is pretty old technology. TR discrimination doesn't do well in hotter soils and is hard to keep ground balanced. If it was only "bells and whistles" I'd say use it, but it's discrimination and depth more importantly. Also, from what I remember it wasn't actually a lightweight detector especially compared to modern detectors. I think it's time to upgrade.

Thank you so much for the input. So do you think the Pro would be a good step up rather than going all the way for the Max??
 
Ground Hog, great in it's day, has been replaced with new/better technology. Better depth, water proof, water detecting, much better discrimination, lighter, better battery life, incredible value for the dollar but still one of the best manufacturers in USA and fantastic warranty. Garrett really backs their products.
 
I’d say go for a max... might as well being that it’s the newest one and would be such a giant step up for you.
 
Thanks guys! I have decided to go with the max. It will be a couple months before I purchase it as it is winter here yet so I am now price hunting. The best I have seen online so far is a bundled package with pinpointer for $849. I have no local dealer. Is this a good price? I can find the detector alone for less but would like the extras as I never had them before with my old one. Now the danged ground hog says 6 more weeks of winter!! LOL Thanks again!!!
 
Good luck when you get it. I have a pro and it's a very good detector. I don't have a max, but there's tons of positive feedback about it. I think you made a good choice!
 
I just come across a Garrett GTI 2500. I had never heard of it. Is anyone here familiar with it and how would it compare to the at-max?
 
I had one a few years back. I was not impressed. The ATPro is a much better machine. I would expect the Max to be better even still.
