Hobbies

Hobbies these days are small since we live on a boat. However my business IS a large shop. Or what's left of it in this wonderful economy but that's for other threads.

I enjoy metal detecting.
Even though I earn a living at it I still enjoy doing woodworking for myself.
Wood turning, I have a jacked head Conover with about an 18" swing.
Played with glass blowing (lampworking) and still have to tools and supplies but no time right now.
Sailing
Used to go skin and scuba diving but currently don't have much time for that either.
Pistol shooting and occasional rifle work as well.
Reloading mostly. 45 ACP
Also was a full time knife maker when I was younger, still keep promising myself I'll do it again as a hobby. Still have my tools.

Fur Trapping
Fishing
Indian Artifact Hunting
Gravestone Photography
Metal Detecting
Watercolor Painting

I enjoy shooting but haven't done it for a while. I have a couple of pistols and a couple of rifles.

Lisa

There was an Indian village on the banks of the creek that runs through my parents property (it actually belongs to me and my sister now). When I was little I would walk down there and find arrow heads and other odds and ends.

I wouldn't call it a "hobby" I am calling it a mission in life to learn as much as possible from the letter God sent to us. After all, God did give us this wonderful instruction manual / letter for us to read and I feel compelled to read it on a daily basis.

My Hobbies: in no particular order;
metal detecting -own one detector - Sovereign GT
historical research local and U.S. wide, Living in CT I have access to one of the oldest newspapers in the country - all online. The kicker is that you have to be a CT resident in order to use the database. I have found many nice detecting spots just by reading the newspaper articles that span from 1764 - 1985.
Canoeing / kayaking
trout fishing
target shooting (paper targets lol)
scouting for old foundations in the woods / hiking / animals / nature (of what is left of me hearing it) hearing loss / 24/7 tinnitus (ringing in the ears / orchestra of crickets ) it is not fun but God has given me the strength to deal with it.
studying map overlays
e-mail / staying in touch with friends / family
taking pictures
body-weight exercising / Olympic ring training
rails-to-trails bike riding - check your area to see where your rails-to-trails are - since these are old rail lines, look for old picnic groves or train stops to go back to with your metal detector :)

Ever do any hiking on the Appalachian Trail when you were living in Tennessee? I've done some section hiking on it in Tennessee and in North Georgia. I live in Alabama and there has been talk for several years about extending it from North Georgia on into Northeast Alabama (not too far from where I live), but it looks like "talk" is all we ever get. Other than the AT, the only hiking I have done in TN is on many of the trails in and around the Smokey Mountains.

Lisa

Unfortunately Lisa, I never had the chance to hike the AT. I got the opportunity to hike the Vermont or New Hampshire (not sure which now) portion of the AT, but was busy with high school at the time and couldn't afford to spend my 2 week spring vacation hiking the 100 plus miles. Too much school work at the time. Never even made it to the smokies, seeing as we were located in middle Tennessee. Did enjoy hiking TN tho.

It would be great if they extended the AT to the gulf coast. I did not realize until recently that the AT actually goes into Quebec for another 1900 miles. The International AT.

I didn't realize that either! Thanks for telling me that. :)

I noticed you listed bass fishing. When I was 11 years old, I caught an 11 pound bass! It was the highlight of my young life at that time! What made this story even more exciting (to me, anyway) was the fact that I didn't catch it on a hook. I had caught a bluegill and was reeling it in when the bass hit the blue gill and its fins got stuck in the throat of the bass and that's how I caught it. Now, hows that for a fish tale! lol

Lisa

Jim, sounds like we have a lot of the same interests. :)

Hi Lisa,

Yes, after reading your exhaustive list lol - I see many similarities :) Best of luck treasure hunting in 2012.

P.S.I like your fish story about the largemouth bass. A situation just as you describe (the bass was probably between 5 - 6lbs) happened to me several years back. However, the bass was able to get free as he approached the shoreline :( Scared the living daylights right out of me lol. My intentions that day was to go have fun (with my super ultra lite trout pole & 4lb test line ) and catch a bunch of panfish at a tiny little pond. I never invisioned a bass that size lurking in this small pond.

Good fish tale Lisa! I wish I had one like that. Mine usually involve lost lures, broken boat motors or getting caught in a storm.
