Hi guys, my name is Randy.
I am so happy I found a place where I can chat with some vets of this hobby.
I have yet to buy my detector, but I should have it here in about a week or two. I plan on buying a Garrett Ace 250 since I here it is good for the money.
I already have plenty of spots that I am thinking about hitting. My grandmas 1800's horse farm will be one of the first.
I will let you all know what I find and how it's going when I get my Ace.

If you have any tips or anything else you want to share feel free. :usaflag:

I might take some videos too.. But they will be different than the other metal detecting vids you have seen.
 
Hi detectorcon. Welcome aboard.
It's always a good idea to play around with your detector at home before you head out with it. It just makes life easier. If you can collect various targets (ie. coins coke cans, pull tabs foil, screw caps and twist tops from beer bottles, nails and any other metal trash that you can get you hands on) and wave you detector over them, just to get some idea of how they respond, both in visual and audio. Generally coins and rings will lock onto a single notch, or bounce between 2 notches. Sometimes, if they are very close to the coil, they can be a little erratic, but a play around will show you what to expect.
Ignore the pinpoint information in the instruction manual for now as it's not the the best method. Instead, once you have a target( use a coin that you place on the ground) go to the side, making sure that you don't have another metal object where the coil is, press and hold down the pinpoint button, then centre the coil over the target. When you think you have it in about the centre, pull the coil towards yourself with a slight wiggle. The signal will drop off under the 12 o'clock position of the inner coil. As the coil puts out a bowl shaped signal, you may want to try, lifting the coil as you waive it over the target and watch to see where the edges of the signal is. Also do this in pinpoint while watch the depth meter, as this will help with accuracy of where the target really is.
Good luck with you new machine and hobby. It can be a little frustrating at first, but having the forum here can help to cut down on that by pointing you in the right direction.

P.S. When playing around with the various targets at home, just check the ground with your detector in all metal, to make sure that there isn't any metal junk under your coil because it will affect the responce that you get.

I appreciate the advice. I can't wait top use it in the field.
I have been researching for awhile, watching tons of vids on youtube of finds and hunts (crackbadger has been helpful).

I am planning on buying the sports pack along with some coil covers and housing cover since I plan on hunting the woods and the rivers I go to. I think it added up to around $330 for all that on gerratcentral.com

The 250 is a great machine for the money.... it easily competes with some of the higher priced Mds.

As for hunting in the rivers just remember that the 250 CANNOT get its control box wet... even with a cover. The cover is just made to protect it from rain. You would have to modify it for it to be able to hunt all the way up to the control box in water. I'm not saying that you didn't already know all of this, but I just wanted to be clear on it.

I knew that the housing control box couldn't get wet. I don't really plan on going to far in the water with it, just in some of the small pools on river beaches that i fish.

I may have to wait another week before I even get to order the Ace because of the snow.
I am already over anxious to get started. I have watched at least 50 vids on youtube about the Ace and the hobby in general. I think I know a good amount for not getting ahold of one yet. haha..
I even had a dream a few days ago that I found a silver ring, so maybe I will get some luck..

Here is the list of what I plan on buying (I may decide to wait on the sniper coil but I am not sure yet).

a pro-pointer would be a very nice add-on to your purchase. it really saves time when digging targets. i don't really use coil covers. use that money for a pro pointer. best investment i ever purchased for metal detecting.

Welcome to the wonderful hobby of metal detecting. I like the propointer myself. It saves a lot of time.
