Hunting style question

Pretty silly question related to my upcoming purchase. With my MXT, I go to a site, adjust my notches accordingly and start hunting. I've been reading that the V3i can be adjusted to "your" hunting style. What exactly does that mean? Am I missing something here? My hunting style is just that - go to a site and hunt. If it's a park, I may hit the areas with the most activity first and grid off an area. I'm sure most do the same. So explain to me how I can program the unit to my style. thanks

Two styles come to mind, I'm sure there are more. We have the slow mythological hunter listening for the deep peeps and then we have the "scanner" who quickly covers an area cherry picking. Your recovery delay becomes an important adjustment in each case.

James have you read the v3 and vx3 manual yet? Have you watched the training videos? Have you checked for a dealer where you can try out a V3i? It sounds like you have not checked how a V3i works. If you are not convinced you want one then asking on a V3i forum is no help.

I understand how things work quickly. I never had trouble navigating the V3i. I borrowed one from Larry and on our first weekend hunt between us we found close to 350 quarters. So it can be a turn on and go detector. (one hunting style)

OK, you asked about setting to your style. Things you can't adjust to your style on the MXT;

Filters - to match your swing speed and mineralization

Recovery Speed - to adjust for open field or trash hunting

Modes - optimized single frequency, 3 frequency, salt mode, salt soil, mixed mode, all metal, stereo mixed mode.

Discrimination - ability to notch

Tones - fully adjustable ( disc out nothing but set some VDI to zero tone.)

Spectragraph - adjust colors, information shown, intensity or consistency base, resolution, base threshold.

That's enough for this question. Find 4 guys and none of us will have the same settings because we all hunt differently.

Oh yeah. Read the VX3 manual but not the V3i. No dealer in Phoenix has either model to test. One dealer might have one later next week - we'll see.

I totally understand the concept of the Spectra series and have a pretty good grasp on how it works. I'm ready to fiddle with it. Regarding this post, so many have written that you can adjust the machine to your 'style'. I'm just reading too much into it. I completely understand it's adjustability - That's essentially what the Spectra series is - an ADJUSTABLE machine. It wasn't until I read your post that the light bulb went off and connected the term 'hunting style' to one's desire to adjust. I'm way to analytical! :drinking:

Only you can determine if it is what you want and like...............

At this point, I've made up my mind. I'm getting the machine. It would be nice to fiddle with it before purchasing, but since nobody has one around, I figured I'd pick everyone's brain about some stuff before it arrives....

Both are also willing to help all learn the best approach for using the V's too....

As I said in other posts, for me, I would get the V3i over the VX3. My programs make use of best data most of the time and make use of custom tones and zero tones for discrimination.

I have two versions of the same coin program, for instance when I'm hunting an old site I use the slower 5 band filter along with a longer recovery delay. When I'm hunting the big football field / park I use the faster 10 band filter with a shorter recovery delay and speed up my swing speed, as Larry pointed out these are two very common hunting styles.

I have a lot of programs designed around the coil I'm going to use. Take a trashy park for instance. I may want to use the BigFoot coil and just hunt for quarters for some quick bucks or maybe use the 4X6 to pick some goodies from among the trash.
P.S. I'm in Mesa

I decided on the VX3. For my needs, I just don't think I'd reap all the benefits of the V3i. Maybe I'll regret it in 2 years - who knows. But for now, I think this unit will do fine. Tom - I don't know if you prefer going solo, but I'd love to go out with you some time and learn some tips with the V. Should have it next week. Will play with it for a week and get used to the machine. Maybe if you have time, some time after that?
