I do think it would be nice if someone from Minelab or someone involved in the development of the E-TRAC would explain the details of...

the thoughts and philosophy of this machine's design (especially since it's so different from the Explorer that we have been used to...it's OK but just explain it please) so we, the buyers, understand it better and can use the machine to maximize it's design intent. Obviously this machine is WAY different than an Explorer so Minelab would have to expect most every Explorer user to be really confused about how this machine is IDing what we usually hunt for? Everyone from Minelab and others involved have been absolutely mum about the ferrous tones issue, ferrous 12 thing, etc...there have been some hints about this in the manual, Minelab website and MLO videos but no specifics as to why? I don't think we should have to figure this out after spending $1500 on the machine. Our new leased GMC Acadia has a very detailed manual explaining everything...if it didn't we would be in trouble since it's such an electronically complex vehicle...just like an E-TRAC to me...please correct me if I'm wrong. I would prefer to have it spelled out for me. Before we can successfully use it, we need to understand the language but we need the "rosetta stone" for the E-TRAC. This "problem" will hold back sales for sure like it has already. Less time on the forums trying to understand/figure this out = more time to detect and finds to post...JMHO...HH

Since he has a book coming out they are probably waiting to let the book explain it. Only fair to Andy, for all his work in research and writing. It is suppossed to be out soon and i'm certain it will explain everything.

It has the potential to re-open sites where some really good targets still lie. To get that really masked CS buckle and GA button and that 20 dollar gold piece that no one has been able to detect !!!

I'm looking forward to the challenge and haven't put much thought into what everyone has said so far.
Lets go back to the future ad enjoy the challenge of the hobby.

Jim.

I have been reading between the lines for some time.

I m not an expert, but.

Is it possible that what we see is a recognition of the signature of a round object,,

Maybe some experts can debunk this idea....

just to boost book sales?...If that's the case then just tell us so. Andy is a super knowledgeable guy who surely puts his time and effort into this hobby for everyone's benefit. We will support him and appreciate his efforts. I don't think some insight into our ferrous and ID questions about the E-TRAC will detract from book sales since I'm sure there is much more to learn in the book about the detector...HH

ANDY------THAT'S MY BOOK!!!!!---I WANT MY BOOK AND I WANT IT NOW!!!!!-----ARE YOU LISTENING ANDY???---ANDY--ANDY---------:heh:

The fact that people such as Chris are posting statements that even insinuate that I am intentionally "holding back information" to make a buck selling a book has struck a nerve with me. I am quite sure that there are many of you that have vital, essential jobs but for those of you that do not know anything about me, let me take a minute and update you.

I have been hunting since the 1960's and as many of you do, I treat detecting as an obsession . . . . but it does not put food on the table and my real job is serving as a federal regulator at a nuclear power plant. For the better part of a year now I have been the only one assigned permanently as the other inspector left the agency . . . . . to say that I am putting in long hours is an understatement - ask my family and see what they have to say.

I was involved in the Minelab E-Trac project and for far longer than I thought I would be. Again, some history here. The E-Trac was intended to be released months ago and the new software - note I said NEW and not simply a repackaged Explorer - took many, many iterations to finally get right. The SE Pro coil as everyone is calling it was initially developed for the E-Trac and Minelab finally released it by itself to get something out from the factory (the pressure from the Codan buyout was felt all over). There were binders of material provided during the development to those in the project on the entire detector and features but before any of that was provided, we all had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. In case you don't know what that means, if we disclose the material, we get sued . . PERIOD! I have been working with Minelab to see what I can release but intend to do it within the guidelines I am given.

Back to the statement that I am saving up information to push my book. First, unlike some financial support provided to other venues or websites, I am receiving exactly ZERO from Minelab in terms of publishing the book. Second, I am trying to get it written while putting in 11+ hours a day at work and taking care of family stuff. I do not camp out on the computer and wait to answer posts. As many can attest to, I can talk faster than I can type and have called a number of posters up recently personally to answer their questions on the E-Trac. . . . at times spending 30 minutes or more doing so. If I can call and discuss what you are looking for I will do it but please, I do have a life and to make the accusation that I am unwilling to share what information I have is stepping over the line in my book.

Need a question answered? Try a PM to me with a phone number and a good time to call and if I can get back to you I will.

Those that know me know that I will freely give what information I have WHEN I can get to the request for it and since the E-Trac's release, I have spent a good deal of time on the phone doing just that.

Personally, looking at some of the posts since the E-Trac was released it is clear why some of the more seasoned hunters no longer frequent the forums or at least post . . . . . . if every post is immediately dissected and torn apart, the free exchange of information will continue to drop off.

So, in closing, I want to make it clear that if I can post information or respond to a PM or call request I will but again, I do not visit the forums throughout the day. To say I am looking to take advantage of what I have learned to make a book sale is a tad ridiculous and to say that Minelab is letting me address the questions in the book is even more so . . . . well let me say that Minelab is not in the loop for the book nor are they providing any monetary support for the project.

Good evening,

Andy Sabisch

Good stuff Andy, I am one of the real old guys that do not post very often because I don't like to argue, If I feel the need to do so ---Well I have a wife, I'm looking forward to the book. Hauk

and would have no other reason not to be but after all the secrecy with Minelab about everything, one never knows what they(Minelab) might have directed in regard to further information release particularly "proprietary" information maybe? My statement was directed towards Minelab and not you in regard to "withholding" info. After all these FE 12 and ferrous sounds questions can you post something about it for all of us and not just personal phonecalls or PM's to individuals? I personally would never ask you to call me or respond to a PM since I know you are busy and have a super busy life. We don't know anything about your relationship with Minelab and frankly that's your business but no one has come forth from Minelab or anyone else to give us some more insight into this. I am sincerely sorry if it "struck a nerve". I certainly don't expect you to live on the forums either...looking forward to the book...thank you and good night:)

1. Could ML change the code on the Track to include a low tone on greater than 18 ferrous readings (example) and still keep the variable high conductive tone scale in tact? As this would provide the simplest and most cost effective means of making the Track an all metal machine like its fore runners. In other words: have a ferrous "greater than / then low tone" option added to the conductive tone function or their current slider.

2. Would they be able to update the software through the current SUB port?

I would understand if you could answer the first but not the second. Please ask ML if they will let you, or if they are planning to answer this, themselves as these two questions seem to be on most everyone's mind. Can and will they make the current ETrac to have a true all metal mode, with multi-tone capabilities, that include iron in a low tone?

At the very least, please let them know our concerns and explain to them the huge following of Explorer hunters in the US market that hunt with as little discrimination as possible, always have, always will. Everyone here is in AWE of the ETrac's capabilities, ML far exceeded most's expectations; except for the non all metal issue. No one means to slam ML, we love our King. Please, go to the king, you are the only one he will listen to...just think of the books you'll sell:poke:
