Not very often that anyone will find a V nickle just lying on top of the ground. Makes you wonder how that can be as we all know that coins will slowly work there way down into the soil. Then again, with the freezing and thawing of the ground year after year things do work there way back to the top and anyone who has a garden knows all too well how rocks can make it back to the surface. I guess if heavy rocks can do this amazing feat then I suppose coins can do it as well.Erik in NJ said:Put the nickle in some ketchup for a few days....it'll clean up well. More than likely it erroded out of the hillside as opposed to sitting on the surface for 90 years like you surmised......sounds you've found a great spot there dude! Grid it and show us all of the goodies!
Erik in NJ said:It's just slightly acidic and will slowly clean the coin without the aggressiveness of a brass brush, etc. ...takes a few days..... Change the ketchup when it turns brown. Put the ketchup and the coin in a plastic baggie. It works!
