I found a "V" nickel just laying on the ground!

I was going to do 2 workouts in one today but it was 50

I had just dug two injuns that hit clear down in the pulltab range...but the cursor fluttered towards the center of the screen. I then got a third hit close by that was down between nickel and pulltabs...but since I had just dug two that hit low....I went ahead and gave the third one a shot...and sure enough...my first "fatty". After that I started digging many of those lower hits only to come up with a pile of crap to show for it:detecting:
As for where indian heads hit...and what they sound like....for me...At least 7 out of every 10 I found this year did NOT hit up in the penny area. The vast majority of them hit close to halfway down the right edge...then the cursor danced slightly upwards towards the center...or danced pretty much straight accross towards the center. I got to a point where I felt like I could dig deep injuns in my sleep. I could seriously tell 9 out of 10 times whether or not it was a 8" to 10" deep injun...or a piece of crap. Unfortunately my self promoted "super injun finder" status did not last long...because the next few targets slapped me right in the face. The next 4 targets I dug were little tiny pieces of broken wire:bouncy::smoke::rofl:

Nice going King.:clapping: Not very often that anyone will find a V nickle just lying on top of the ground. Makes you wonder how that can be as we all know that coins will slowly work there way down into the soil. Then again, with the freezing and thawing of the ground year after year things do work there way back to the top and anyone who has a garden knows all too well how rocks can make it back to the surface. I guess if heavy rocks can do this amazing feat then I suppose coins can do it as well. Glad you enjoyed the story I sent to you. Good luck on your next outing and HH.

King, since I started detecting, I am always looking down. I'm amazed at what I find when I look down. I use to work in a school and in a one week stretch I found two silver dimes and 10 wheat pennies. I figured some kid got into their parents rolled coins and brought them to school. Keep them eyes to the ground! Oh by the way, I have converted my wife to the "eyes to the ground" practice.Last week when we were walking from out car to the mall, she found a five and two one dollars bills rolled up. R.L.

Too bad the Nickel didn't clean up like you hoped it would. If the next ones you dig look fairly good, just rinse it off with water and maybe a little soap on an Old Toothbrush. Don't scrub too much because the patina will start coming off. Just remember that Nickels that have been in the ground will most likely be Red Color and Pitted due to the ground conditions so hopefully this will be a lesson well learned. Usually I clean my Nickels just like you did but usually will use a Soft Bristled Brass Brush and some Soap and Water. Usually it takes 2 times each side to get the Nickel to look somewhat normal but it also reveals the Pitting of the Coin and sometimes less Details that the Coin initially had. Just something to think about on Nickels. To Clean or Not To Clean. WTG on finding that V-Nickel on top of the ground though! Good Eye King!

As for Fatty Indians, I have never dug one. All the Injuns I find are the Normal Indians but maybe someday I will get lucky and snag one of them illusive Fatties that Bryce has found so many of.

Also, the reason you had the 10-6, 10-7 in your head is because Nickels generally will be found in this area. War Nickels will read a bit higher than your Normal Nickel and sometimes I have found Nickels on Edge, that gave a Conduct Number of 4. Hope you get out again and find a few more Coins King. Sure is a drag not being able to get out anymore but at least I have my Research to do and all the other Great Finds that you and the lucky others are still finding to look at. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you King!

I couldn't believe it when I saw the faint outline of a "V". I said this is a stinking "V" Nickel!! this MD period ended in a good note. I pumped in a couple days of some hours and got nothing but clad but that all changed yesterday with a kennedy and WL half and then this V nickel today. I mean the first thing I think about is I can';t wait to post this on FM because everyone I know finds this as interesting as getting circumcised. So it's reassuring to hear eveyone's imput especially the 'big guns" and when I see someone post I make a genuine comment because I know how it feels to get encouragement.

I relic hunter would have fun in that place too. I am seeing a lot of old metal pieces just laying around on top of the ground.

Put the nickle in some ketchup for a few days....it'll clean up well. More than likely it erroded out of the hillside as opposed to sitting on the surface for 90 years like you surmised......sounds you've found a great spot there dude! Grid it and show us all of the goodies!

what will the ketchup do? Will it get rid of the rust spots?

It's just slightly acidic and will slowly clean the coin without the aggressiveness of a brass brush, etc. ...takes a few days..... Change the ketchup when it turns brown. Put the ketchup and the coin in a plastic baggie. It works!

I'm trying now dude, thanks. I'll repost a pic when it's "cooked"
