I found another Flying Eagle cent

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
Fri I went to an old school/park that I have been to in the past and did ok the last time I was there. Well Fri I did pretty good too. I found a 44 Washington Quarter, a 45 Merc, a 1905 IH and 5 wheat's.

When I got back to my town I stopped at a house and asked for permission to MD a yard and I got the ok. The owner has been doing some repairs on the house which was built in 1874 and he did some scraping down the yard a long the sidewalk so that the yard would slope down to the sidewalk a lil better. So that was the first place I started and the first good signal I got was a 1874 IH. about a foot from there I found a 1858 Flying Eagle Cent. wow, that's my second one this year and that's a coin I didn't think I would ever find and now I have two of them. about 10' from that coin I found a 1907s Barber dime that looks like somebody tried to cut it with a pair of side cutters and I scratched it on the back, oops. then I found a 1883 V nickel. then at the end of my first pass I found the 43s Merc dime. On my return pass I didn't do as good as the first pass. I found a couple wheat's and a IH on that pass and in those 2 passes I covered all of the scraped down area in the yard. The rest of the front yard was not as good as the first 2 passes. I found another V nickel 1900, 2 more IH's a few more wheat's, a cool old F.D button and some other things.

Sat I went back and finished the rest of the yard and found another IH, a wheat and some kind of old buckle.

That was one of the better yards I have done in a long time.

 Awesome hunt Mark! That FE is too cool!

Nice fancy suspender buckle, V's, IH's, and silver as well.

Good job. How deep were you finding them..

Congrats Mark. That Flying Eagle is one tough coin to find in the places we hunt. Nicely done! HH Randy

Just curious Mark, is that 83 V nickel with cents or no cents on the back? I have a 83 V that has no cents. There is a slight value difference, if it makes any sense!

The Flying Eagle, a IH, the Barber and The merc I found in the area that had the sod scraped off and those coins were 1" to 2" deep. All the rest of the coins and other things in the pic were 4" to 6" deep.

Sorry, after I made the post I got thinking that I should of said that it had "cent" on the back.

It kind of funny that the ones with CENT's are worth more then the ones with out the word CENT on the back.

Very nice Mark. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the story and the pictures.

Really enjoy your posts and pics of your excellent finds! I have yet to try private properties and would really like go in that direction. Any hints on how to approach homeowners?
Thanks,
Chuck

I really wish I could give you some good advise on getting permission from land owners but I'm not very good at door knocking. I have to make myself to do it because their is not too many good public land left to MD in my area. like the place I was at Fri, he had some of his yard scraped down and he was removing some bushes so I figured it would be a easy to get permission since his yard was tore up some. I have no problem asking farmers to MD in their fields but it's not easy for me to ask permission to MD a yard and that's something I need to work on myself because some yards have some great finds in them..

Thanks Mark. You have motivated me to get started asking for permission to dig on private property. In fact, I have my eye on a lot (now on private property) that used to be a penny candy store in the 30's & 40's. I think there might be lots of wheats and maybe Indians just waiting to be dug and even a few silvers.

Can I ask what kind of readings the Flying Egale gave?
Thanks,

Killer hunt Mark, I have dug 4 flying eagles myself, so I know they are far and few between, a tough coin to find! You know as well as I do, private yards are where I do best! I have door knocked so much in the last 5 yrs it is just second nature to me.

If I remember right the numbers were jumping between 18 and 27 but I'm not real sure about that, sorry. I found it in the area that had the sod scraped off so I wasn't paying too much attention to the numbers all that much. In that area if it beeped, I dug it.
