I have some stupid questions.............

Bobbie

New member
Just got a Quattro and I am trying to get used to it after working with a Headhunter PI for 3 years.......One sound fits all.

Why am getting high end readings on some plain old rocks.......not all rocks just a couple of them today?........even with the SunRay probe I was getting a silver reading.......there's no silver in our area. I am working very wet clay.

Why is the recovery rate so slow?......is there some way I can speed it up.

I am finding stuff........mostly junk......copper wire pieces, brass pieces, just having a hard time trying to figure out the sounds and matching them to the readings. How do you know when it is really a silver coin and not a piece of junk even though it reads coin on the meter.

Any suggestions?

Man, I'm not sure where to start on this one. Sounds to me like your still in the "just getting used to the new detector (even though your not a rookie) stages. I owned several detecotors before I bought the Quatro, and honestly,,,, it threw me for a loop for about the first week or so, but after that it started to make sense. You do get a "LOT" of tones with the Quatro and a lot of different number readings. My best suggestion, and I'm not trying to skate around the issues here, I swear, is get ahold of Andy Sabisch's book Mastering the Quatro. I'v never read a more difinitive book on anything in my life as that book. He nails it right to the floor as to how this "bad boy" works. I "still" refer back to that book from time to time to check on certain things because it is that comprehensive. As for the hot rocks thing, I'm not sure what you're dealing with there but I know I've had a few "screwey" readings myself from time to time, but usually under reasonable conditions, this unit will perform very accuratly. Make sure you ground balance it properly, set the threshold properly, (just barely audibly, in my opinion) and try setting the sensitivity on auto if you're having that much trouble. You can increase the recovery rate by setting it on "high trash density". I don't usually use that because I think it picks things up quick enough for my liking with the low setting, but if you use the high setting it won't give you as much accuracy as to target id but you should get quicker recovery rate. Remember that you should approach a "questionable" target at different angels sometimes to get a more accurate reading. All of this stuff is covered in Andy's book, so go get it and you won't be sorry. This is a great detector and goes very deep, so stay with it and read Andy's book.

Yes I agree, you must slow down excessively compared to other detectors. Makes a patient person.

I hope you get the hang of it. I am still stumped at times and pinpointing isn't really easy either. Lots of luck!!!

My PI was one sound fits all!!........I've mastered the pinpointing and I have the SunRay Probe attached so that makes it double easy. I am going to get the book as suggested, hopefully my dyslexia brain will understand it!

Don't worry about dexlexia. I really have it. I transpose numbers from time to time, but I still can understand Andy's book. It's straightforeward, great information from a very good author. I just like the way he lays it out in a very thorough down to earth way. Just read it, and study it and try it foryourself and you'll see. It's worth any effort you have to put out to understand this detector. I think this unit has a shorter learning curve than a lot of units. Just do the homework and you'll be glad you did.

And, yea, I keep posting to myself, that might be part of this dislexic thing, who knows. Maybe I'm just doing it to shake your cage finn.:bouncy::hot::tongue::wiggle: I'm jivin ya, but who cares anyway.?:cheers::cheers:

Hello,

I felt the same way when I started using the Quattro. I believe the "relative" slow recovery rate is in direct proportion to the ability of the Quattro to find DEEP targets and properly identify them. Perhaps I am "all wet", but that seems to be what I have found using the Quattro for beach hunting.

I have not used a "probe" since I have NO problem pin-pointing with the Quattro doing beach hunting.

Reference your comment ref "sounds vs readings", I have found that by looking at the numeric readings, instead of the "pretty graphics", I am continually getting better at properly identifying the targets. However, remember that a lot of "junk" will have the same numeric reading and almost the same sound (if not exactly the same) as a good target. An example on the beach, that happens frequently, is a pull-tab having the same reading as an engagement ring. Size and shape (of some pull-tabs) are almost exactly the same as an engagement ring. If anyone indicates that they can always tell the difference between them I believe that they are fooling themselves and possible missing some rings!

Right on Shagger, and I think Mike would "probably" aggree, or at least advise us to dig everything at the beach. I think he can tell pull tabs from nickels, but like were looking at here, gold is a funny thing when it comes to numbers on the Quatro. I'd dig everything at the beach, just to be sure. (Even if you need a back hoe to do it):heh::heh::hot::hot::detecting::detecting:

Ok, ok, ok. I admit it. I'm posting to myself too much. I think it's just carelessness on my part, but I just hope you can tie it in with what I'm posting about. I'll make an effort to straighten up and fly right. That's probably BS, because I told Mike the same thing about my poor spelling habits, and I'm still being lazy on that end too. I hope you guys still love me, though. I'm just a poor slob out in California, trying to make a living finding clad coins on the beach here. Surley, you can understand my impoverished condition here, just me, the dog and this expensive metal detector. I mean, I can't even pay Uncle Sam because it cost me so much to buy this detector and it takes at least 4 or 5 hours to find enought clads and beer cans to buy a couple of tacos at the local Jack in the Box. In fact, speaking of boxes, please send your donations to P.O. Box..... Wait, we interupt this B.S. to tell you that Marc Trainor was just kidding you and he still digs you guys and he'll work on all this jazz, at least a little bit. It's probably psychological. I think I do it just to feel a little loose because of all the othere constraints in my life. Besides, I can't afford therapy, so I guess your my "budjet" therapists. Hope I don't over do it though and lose your account. You guys are truly a part of the small list of friends I have left these days. I actually really mean that, but don't feel sorry for me yet, I still have my sister, my dog and my wonderful detector to help keep me sane. I might even join a detector club so I can meet some other weirdos that walk around the park in their shorts in the middle of the night with a flash ligte strapped on their head. Just kidding, a little. You know, at this point, I don't even care if they laugh at me. I'll just laugh back at them when I see them putting paint on their face and spilling beer over the balcony at a football game. I mean, what's the difference? We're both just trying to have a little fun int this crazy world, with a minimum of danger involved.:lmfao::lmfao::look::look::cry::cry:;);)

Thankyou finn... I thought I probably lost everyone on that last post, but at least your still putting up with my craziness. The worst part of it is it's almost all true, but I just have to keep working on things and try and keep things under control. Of course I'm kidding about the donations and stuff, but everynow and then it shakes my cage a little to think, well here I am again, walking around some park alone, looking for burried coins and stuff instead of mowing the lawn or doing something really normal, but what the heck. I can't mow the lawn, cause I don't even have a lawn mower. Please send you donations to...:) That's no excuse, I tell myself, because I do have a weed eater when it'll fire up. Finn, you have a good day, and maybe some day I'll be able to meet you in person and have some coffee or do a little detecting together. Thanks for the support.:):|

Pinpointing was very difficult for me to in the beginning (having come from almost 30 years of concentric coil use). But I have learned that I can actually pinpoint more accurately with a double d coil now. On my quattro I never use the pinpoint mode. For solid targets (i.e targets that hold a solid signal on both directions of the "wiggle" over the target), I get the "wiggle" going in a tight pattern (approx 2 to 3 inches accross) and slowly back the coil away from the target - I find at the point the signal fades or changes in tones, the target is at the tip of the coil.

For the deeper, less solid targets I tend to "paint" an imaginary line through the center of the coil on the ground where the signal is strongest and then rotate the coil about 45 degress and resweep/repaint a new line - where the two lines cross, that's is where the target is - works most of the time anyway.
