Hello everybody, I have struggled with finding Silver coins since I started using the Etrac. I havent had an issue finding silver jewelry. I find out now that I am partialy tone deaf and have Neuromechanical tinnitus. Certain high pitched noises like chirping birds have always made my ear sound like it was fluttering inside or pulsating. I dont notice it when I have the headphones on but I guess it is keeping me from telling the difference between the highest pitches that the Etrac makes. I guess I hear the two highest pitches as the same tone. I realized early on that I was relying on the #s the machine was showing me more than most other users. I have put in the time and now am asking for any help you can give me. What all #s do silver coins come in at. I have found 8 or 9 silver coins so far and one dime and one quarter were Canadian. Do they make different sounds than US dimes and quarters? Do they usually give different #s? Also what settings would you use to make the silver have the most distinct sound?
I have noticed that the highest pitch I ever hear is the sound of a quarter. I think the 12-48 sound is the same sound I hear for a quarter. Should it sound different with the audio variability set to 30? I have found probaly 30 silver rings and other silver items but I guess the silver sounds the same to me as dimes, pennies, and quarters. Any help with the #s and sounds would be awesome. Idigid

I suffer from tinnitus. Really bad high pitched ringing in ears. The only thing that reduces it, but does not eliminate it, are in the ear hearing aids. Hold on to your shorts....$5000.00 total is what these two bad boys cost. Wish I had a better solution. Tinnitus is almost impossible to alleviate with drugs/surgery IMHO and research.
My other suggestion is to experiment with different headphones as they all have different frequency/tonal variation responses. You may get lucky and find a pair that helps.

I have the same problem. I suggest that you try hunting in TTF. Dig every high tone sound and record the numbers in a notebook and also note the depth. I then transferred the numbers and depth to my computer. After awhile you will collect enough information to make judgements in the field. Takes extra time but worth it IMHO.

I too have tinnitus and to be honest I RARELY can tell the difference in sound between a clad dime and a silver dime. Every now and then I can get the difference but I just dig every good coin signal that is dime or better that way you don't have to worry. Penny signals I can tell better but the silver does not sound a whole lot different to me.

Tinnitus will always be with you if you hunt with headphones on. I don't know why, but people in the DJay'ing radio industry suffer as well.

Idigid, you might try playing with the THRESHHOLD PITCH setting and see what you can hear and can't. Mess around with that and the combination of 4 tones, variablility and limits settings. I'd play/adjust those in the house with different coins air testing them. Make sure you turn your Sensitivity down to 5 or so.

As I recall TIPPYHOUND, who we see on hear everyonce in a while might have tone hearing problems as well. You might search back for those posts too.

Take care,

NebTrac

Have you tried lowering your threshold pitch all the way down? This will shift all the tones down lower. Also try using 4 tones for a cleaner beep.

Nebtrac, I was typing while you posted so our posts are similar. I tried all adjusting all these audio tones when I first got my etrac. I couldn't believe how versatile the machine is. I actually ended up with my Threshold Pitch at 8. I think a lot of hunters run it real high but this sounded good to my ears. I hope IDprospector can find the right pitch for his ears.

sorry to hear of your ongoing "malady" i too, have that, and it sounds like bees buzzin' in my head all the time!

i am used to it,but it still bothers me.i cannot pay $5000.00 for hearing aids,so i will live with it!..just sayin'

Go to page 57 in your manual audio menu and make changes here to suit your hearing level for example select sounds conduct or ferrous this will change the tone silver makes. Some users have been successful with two tone ferrous"If the pitch of the target audio responce is to high for your hearing limit it with the tone I.D. limits setting p.68 You can also reduce the pitch by adjusting variability"I personaly like pitch hold it mantains the tone lever of the last target in the threshold so that a good target is not just a high clip.Select audio menu go to responce curser untill you find pitch hold.CEDAR

I absolutely swear there was no PUN intended...cross my heart. I didn't catch it soon enough. :look:

My E-Trac give me a conductive number of 45 for dimes, 46-47 for quarters, 47-48 for Halves and silver jewelry. Occasionally they will vary, but not often.

I have hearing loss and tinnitus too, but thankfully I can hear that "flutey" sound that differentiates silver from clad.

Fortunately this year I have been able to hear a lot of silver. So far my silver coin count for the year has been off the charts at 51 (1 Walker, 1 Barber Quarter, 4 SLQ's, 1 Washington, 1 2.5 Escudos from Portugal, 3 Barber Dimes, the rest about equal Merc's and Rosies), which is a record for me. I only had 31 last year. Also a lot of silver jewelry.

I hope you can sort it out to your benefit. The E-Trac is a silver killer. I have found several silver coins in holes with nails and even rust stains. I would think I was fooled , but would rescan the hole and realize the E-Trac didn't lie.

Happy Hunting!!

JMary.....the gov't paid for it. The tinnitus is due to my military service. No way in God's green earth could I afford to pay for something like these.

i hear ya! i thought as much but of course,it's none
of my business. at least you are able to keep it under control
so you can hunt!..just sayin'

I am digging everything conductive 35 on up on up with a solid high tone. Went to a park with another etrac user and dug some deep wheaties and he got a few silvers. He always gets silvers at this park and I have alwasy got wheaties and clad! I have been wondering about this as I too have a major hearing problem and have been fooling around with the settings on my Etrac. Good advice on this thread. Thanks everyone!
