I know it's old hat now, but I got my new E Trac today and am still reading.

If you go into it with an open mind and not try to compare with the Explorer. I think learning it will be easier. We already have the basics in our cranial library.
Rained all day. Can't wait to fire her up.
I was only going to field test one. I just don't know what happened. I couldn't stop myself and just up and bought it.

From what I can put together without using it yet has raised one concern.
Running all metal, with multi tones is fine but. Conductive or ferrous sounds is the dilemma. If you run ferrous sounds and all coins come in at 12 on the ferrous "line" they'll all sound the same. If I run conductive sounds, it takes in the whole expanse and iron will sound high pitched too.
I guess I have to just try it before I speculate too much.

If you run All White (All Metal) and Ferrous tones, you hear iron as a low tone and the good stuff as a clearly different, higher tone. So, while you can not differentiate a nickel from a dime from a bullet by the audio alone, all you have to do is move your eyes slightly and glance at the meter to see what the Digital value and SmartFind cursor location is. I spent close to 2 hours in an iron-infested site testing patterns and All Metal yesterday evening here in Tennesee on a business trip and found it quite easy to distingush the good signals from the "low growls" of iron . . . . not sure I would care to hunt that way in many areas due to the incessant noise especially with the E-Trac's see-through capabilities but it can be used it you are so inclined. It does require some slight eye movement to look at the screen but only if you HEAR a good tone . . . . . so I guess the question again is how is this different than hunting in Ferrous on the Explorer other than having to GLANCE at the screen to ID targets that are not iron?

I will be taking some people out Civil War relic hunting with a pair of E-Trac's this weekend in Atlanta and they are seasoned Explorer users that also hunt wide open in Ferrous audio - I am interested to get their read on using the E-Trac setup as they are used to hunting with it.

As many have said, "The E-Trac is NOT (repeat NOT) your Explorer" and one needs to either go into it with an open mind to find a way to get it to do what you want it to (much the way we all did when the 1st Explorer came out . . .or have we forgotten that fire storm comparing the Explorer to the Sovereign) or if that is not an option, stick with what is working for you now - the Explorer - and know you are still finding more than anyone other than possibly an E-Trac user.

Interested to see what perspectives there are on this . . . . . . and preferrably from those that have used the E-Trac in iron-rich sites rather than simply reading over the manual and staking out a position based on what others have posted.

to me, that's the big deal about ferrous audio and tones more than anything else with an Explorer. I can hunt a site in all metal and ferrous sounds with an Explorer, just listening and watching the ground to make sure I'm overlapping my swings as perfect as I can and pretty much know what I'm digging without really ever looking at the smartfind cursor or icon, especially since there's such a lag in the update in the iron. That's what I like about my Fisher CZ-70 Pro too...I can just listen to the audio and pretty much know what I'm digging even if there's an audio bounce- a huge advantage just not having to watch the meter but it's still there if I need it. For me, if I can't use ferrous tones and have the full audio differentation in all metal to minimize the nulling in the iron that occurs with any discrimination, then the E-Trac just isn't ideal for me at the kind of sites I always hunt. I know the E-trac is a new machine in many aspects and one has to learn how to use it to best utilize it's capabilities, but for the life of me, I can't see how it's better to not have that capability even with it's apparent better iron "see-through" capabilities. My brain just got used to the noise and a "good" target really stands out...just my humble opinion and experience...granted there are MUCH more experienced Explorer users out there including a Master who has wrote a book or two on the subject...thanks Andy  as well as some that have their own website to kindly explain their take on the machine as well as all the experienced users on this fine forum...HH

I am going to take it to that site I described to you. Hunted out (by me), iron infested, hot rock infested, CW calvary campsite and homesite for 171 years... that is an old home for NW GA.

Also going to take it to an old school today. I've only read through the manual once but i'll have it with me.

Love to meet you sometime when you are in the neighborhood, when time and situations allow. :twodetecting:

For us die hard all metal hunters, I;ve been trying to figure out how we can run all metal and have the tones work for us.
Every machine I've ever owned you could run in all metal and pretty much be alerted of a good target without looking at the screen.
The E Trac gives us a new twist in detecting methods. I have not problems with any part of the instructions and use of the ET. What I do have a problem with is making the decision to hunt all metal with a mono tone for all coins or hunt with discrimination and have my coin tone ID back.
And Thanx Andy for the perfect answer to an imperfect Dilemma.

When I'm hunting old sites, which is most of the time. I dig all good signals. That is buttons to silver coins.
Try to look at it as a new machine not a new explorer.

Just got off the phone with Dick. It's as I expected, the only way to hunt in all metal with the best results and less hassle is Ferrous sounds.
All metal and conductive sounds is more work than it's worth. You would be checking the screen constantly.
In ferrous sound as Andy just said, you hear the familiar tone of Ferrous 12. (depending on variability setting) an one quick glance at the scree will tell you what you're digging. In my case it would be almost everything in ferrous 12.
This does not bother me one iota. It's a new machine ad I find it easy and interesting to learn.
