I want to make a purchase of an explorer II or an explorer SE....I have an Explorer xs and love it. But it is getting older and want to know if either the II or the SE is a better machine. I have just read an explorer is an explorer is an explorer.....so in that thinking mode can one get his older explorer xs redone over with a faster processor and still have a good machine with the newer faster processor...my upper rod latch is getting to be a pain cause it slips and I got to keep undoing it and pushing rod back in.......so should I get old xs revamped or get II or SE? I just want the best and a sturdy machine cause I am tough on them cause I am addicted to this hobby. PS MINELAB IS THE BEST! I would never consider any other detector...am also looking for a good bigger coil like a WOT.....any negitives on the Wot?

I say repaint the upper rod so it wont slip any more. Anyway you can make it a little larger. Not to large, this will give it a tighter fit then it wont slip. You could also take the rubber garment out of the locking cam and clean or fix it. Or just do what I did scotch tape the shaft going in. It works for me. Now as far as a newer Explorer, that parts up to you. I say, take your money and invest it in one of these if you don't have them. A good set of head phones IE Grey Ghost, Jolly Rogers, Black Widows or any Top quality Brand. Next an x-1 probe from Sun Ray, (Ralph will take care of you on that) Then hit Predator Tools and get yourself a George Leache T handle long handle relic Shovel. If you don't have them yet a 8 inch search coil, or a larger one say a Wot, or a 12.5 coil. If you already have these, than stick with any Explorer, they are all Top shelf, thats for sure.

I would just hang onto your Explorer XS and use that but if you need a back up machine, the Explorer II or the Explorer SE is the only way to go. Like you said, you can't beat Minelab Detectors! If you were to send in your machine to have Minelab upgrade it, I would think it would cost MORE for Parts than just going out and buying a USED or a NEW EXPLORER. As far as the Upper Shaft problem you are having, this is what I do to fix the slipping Shaft problem. I take 3 pieces of Electrical Tape and apply them at the top of the Explorer XS Upper Shaft, at the very end. Cut the tape long enough so it goes from one side of the Shaft, over the top and down the other side of the Shaft. Do this side by side with the 3 pieces of tape and only one layer and make sure not to apply any tape on the bottom or it will be too much of a shim and you will not be able to get the Upper Shaft back into the Control Box. Hope this helps a little and Good Luck with what ever you choose to do.
