I only dug two coins today...but they totaled 12 CENTS. YIPPEE:thumbup:

Well I met up with Darrell (Deeponedge)...and Kennon (silverfix)...at a cabin site Darrell got permission for us to hunt last year.

I wanted to hit some parks...but we figured we had better give the cabin a shot before it gets all grown up. At least now the grass is smashed down from the winter months...and the prehistoric, bumble bee sized mosquitoes haven't came out of their caves yet.

This site is a place you can hunt for hours and get no signals...but when you do...and it's actually a coin...it's an oldie.
I pulled a pretty nice bust dime out of here last year...so I know the possibilities are there.

It's also a place where you feel you are stepping back in time. I always feel like some demented kook wearing overalls and toting a shotgun...is going to pop out of the woods and try to find someone to marry one of his daughters :crylol:

Today was no different than last year...and I hunted for nearly 3 hours before I got a decent signal with any depth to it.

I then called Darrell over and let him run his SE accross the spot....and Kennon as well...as they like to hear the real deep stuff.

I dug down about 8" and ran the probe in the hole..yippee...coin sound:bouncy:...but NOT a silver sound. I then dug another 2" of dirt out of the way before seeing the rim of what I thought was going to be a large cent. Upon closer inspection though...I noticed it had a nice green patina to it....and seemed to be slightly smaller.

I plucked it from the soil and placed it in the palm of my hand. A pretty nice 2 Cent piece from 10" down:cheers:... and dated 1868. This was my first one of these in quite a few years so I'm thrilled. :smoke:

This cabin was occupied until the mid 1880's so any silver there would be seated or capped. Darrell popped a two center and a half dime out of here last year BEFORE inviting me...thanks pal:wacko: Again...I know there is some more hidin' there but you lose at least 2" of depth right off the bat because of the grass clumping.

Another hour or so yielded nothing else...so we called it a day.

On the way home I stopped at a park that always gives up something. Not a lot...but I can usually pop one or 2 keepers out.
In an hour I only got 2 signals...and only one of them warranted digging. It was a faint chirp...but repeated upon closer investigation.
I was curious as to why it sounded strange so I messed with my gain a little...dropping it in increments of 1 at a time. 9 sounded okay...but once I hit 8...I don't think the sound it made was one I would have stopped to investigate. At a gain of 7...the SE didn't make a peep.

I dug down to 8" and the probe sang silver. I rubbed a little dirt from under the probe...then saw the little silver rim peeking out. It was almost straight on edge...which explained to me why the initial signal I got never really turned into the "warble" I like to hear. For me...a coin on edge always gives a different signal...especially when it's deep. That's another reason I like my gain jacked...to pick up those faint, deep chirps. It's not for everybody...but a lot of these parks I hunt don't have anything in them at depths of less than 7"...so distnguishing deep targets from shallow ones doesn't even figure into the equation.

Anyway...this was to be my second...and last coin of the day. It came from between 9" to 10" down and was a really worn barber dime.

Warm weather is comin' fellers'....so I hope you all dig some deepies. It'l probably be a week or so before I have a chance to get out again. :beers:

Look like good digs to me Bryce ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Nice finds.............Cant wait to see your next finds....Hope ya find some more good things .later !!!!!!!

I don't mind hunting alllllll day loooonnngggg and finding just two coins...as long as they're oldies:thumbup:

I bet most folks that read your post subect will scratch their heads and say .. WTF... 2 coins ... 12 cents .... huh :clapping:
Man I love digging the old 2 cents, 3 cents and half dime goodies ... you just don't dig that many of them .. or at least I don't.
Well I have dug quite a few half dimes ... but the 2 & 3 centers always put a smile on my face.

Good Hunting
Mike

Bryce, nice way to start this coming season. The weather has a warming trend this week, maybe a couple pre season hunts here soon.Signs of spring a Robin on the window sill and Bryce back in the field on a hunt. Both coins are great finds.

How do they read on the SE?..never found one. Another quest..does the shallow trash ever screw u up with the gain so high? I'm actually gonna try the high gain at a few spots this spring where there isn't too much trash just to see. Mine is set at 5..I actually tried 6 the other day and it screwed me up!! But seeing your success, Id be a fool not to at least try it.Continued good fortune to you my Friend..still shooting for my first seated this year!!..Later bro...Chris:usaflag:

Hey Chris!!!
I know you asked Bryce,, But i have had my gain set on 9 for the last year, and just bumped it up to 10 3 weeks ago, I haven't noticed a problem at all!!! And some of my parks have more trash than the local landfill!!!!! lol
Take care bud

Anyway...thanks again for responding . It's work for me the next 6 days in a row...so no hunting for a few days:confused:
Good luck if you get out any. Dig some for me:thumbup:

my first 2 center in quite a few years. In fact I think it's only my third one in 30+ years.
Take care buddy.
PS: I hope someday I can post with the heading "Found 2 coins today but they totaled 4 cents"...but I still haven't found a 3 center in all my years of hunting.
Maybe someday:smoke:

I'm no 2 cent expert:bouncy:...but this one read in the upper right 1/4 of the screen between an injun' and a wheatie.
As for the gain...it's like all metal...it's not for everyone...but it will work for some if given time. You have to get used to the barage of chirps... just like you do the grunt of all metal.
I can't tell you how many deep silver and injuns' I've popped out though...that I definately would not have found with lower gain. High gain just works for me....and I turn both fast and deep off unless in extreme trash. Stick with what works for you my friend. You might give high gain a shot...but use what works for you.
Take care
