I Put A 5.5" DD Coil On The GTI 2500 Today.......

I got in a couple hours hunting after work today. I hit a high school close to where I work. It was just littered with junk, so I thought I'd put my 5.5" Excelerator DD coil on the 2500, just to see how it would work out. I have previously used it on the GTI 1500 with some success, so why not the GTI 2500. It got good depth, but the pinpointing wasn't as good as the Garrett 4.5" Sniper coil. The ID also worked in true all metal mode, which was another reason I used it today. I wasn't sure if it would....but it did flawlessly.

I got lots of coin in a couple of hours. This particular area was one where a small coil would out-perform a large coil, as the junk was so thick in places that the stock coil would have a hard time IDing a coin with so much junk under the scanning area at one time.

Hello John,
I was surprised to see an Excelerator DD coil for the Garrett. I was after a 5 inch Excelerator DD coil for my 1350 but could not find anything on Kellco's web page for Garrett. Should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks

Blimey! that's a good outcome for a couple of hours.
I'll second Bill on the ecelerator coil comment!
Hi Bill. Didn't know you you swung a Garrett's machine. It's good to see you pop up again.

I got mine from Kellyco. Call them and ask for JW. They sometimes have a few sitting around which aren't on their website.

Hey John! Didn't know they made an Excelerator for the GTI's. I'm wondering if you've ever done a comparison between it and the 5x10" DD for sensitivity to smaller targets and depth. I've got a 3 grain test nugget (lost my 1 grainer) and find that the 5x10" coil, while it can see it in AM mode at even min. sens., disc. mode is no-go. I might get the odd signal at max sens., but a repeatable signal can only be obtained by rubbing on the coil (or pretty damn near). It seems to be more sensitive than the GTI 2000 though. It would be nice to get a bit more sensitivity to 'possibly' smaller gold for prospecting. The surprising finding is that the GTI 2500 seems to be nearly as sensitive as the XTerra 70 (w. 5x10" HF DD coil), except in disc. mode. It would also be interesting to see how the 4.5" super sniper does in heavily mineralised soil and w. smaller targets. As an aside, have you (or anyone you know) had the chip upgrade for mineralised ground performed on your GTI(s)? It would be interesting to see how it affects sensitivity to small targets in bad ground. Did some tests a few weeks ago between an MXT (3x7" DD), X70 (5x10" DD), GTI 2500 (5x10" DD), on the Similkameen and found that the mineralisation really cut down the response to the 3 grainer. The 3 detectors were running about equal in AM mode. This is surprising given that the GTI operates at a much lower frequency. Been looking at the GTI 2500 and wondering if a properly designed 2.5" coil extension would affect it any. If not, it would be a simple matter to remove the control box and battery holder and make it into a chestmount. Was thinking of doing the same with the X70, but it evidently buggers up the ID on that unit. ..Willy.

I have never done a comparison test with it. I used it on the GTI 1500 a couple of years ago, and quit using it when the ACE 250 Sniper Coil came out. The 5.5" excelerator coil is an inch bigger then the Garrett Sniper coil. But, the Excelerator is a DD, which might fair well in higher mineralized soil. I put it on to see how it would work on the true all metal mode mode, which it did. Give JW a call at Kellyco, as he may have some kicking around.

The new 2500's have a new chip in them to boost performance in highly mineralized areas. One can have their older models updated. If stiil under warranty it may be free.

Yeah John at Kellyco will help you out if he has anything floating around. I field tested a 12 incher for them about a year ago and it worked pretty good.

Hey there Bill! I read about the new chip and was wondering about what the benefits are re. increased sensitivity or, possibly, decreased sensitivity to small (ie 1-2 grain) gold. I don't think that mine has the new chip, even though it has the new black coil. Was thinking about a DFX because of the ability to max out the gain and 'possibly' increase the sensitivity in disc. mode to find such targets. I generally, when hunting for gold in the backwoods, run at max sens. with no problem. Thing is, there are a number of areas where high-iron hotrocks abound and this often requires a switch into disc. mode to help differentiate between them and small nuggets. The X70 seems to be about as sensitive in disc., running at high gain, as in AM mode and this helps with ID. The GTI 2500 either has a small iron bias in disc. or reduced sens. I'm thinking about trading my X70 for a GMT (for the REALLY tiny stuff) and using the GTI for everything else. It would also be really nice if Garrett somehow managed to squeeze an imaging coil into a 6-7" package.. the stock coil is just toooo big. ...Willy.

This chip was installed at the request of the boys in Australia and you know what their ground is like. You can get yours updated and if it's still under warranty - for free. The chip makes it more sensitive to gold in highly mineralized ground and about anything else.. All the new ones out since August are so equipped.
