but does everyones SE false out as much as mine? I can't even swing the coil across the ground without it falsing (faint, high pitched silver tones, cursor stuck on top right corner) at least twice each direction I swing. It makes it a real pain in the ass when you are listening for faint, high pitched silver tones!!

Have you cleaned the bottom of your coil? Take the Cover off the coil and clean it up some....

I too had some falsing but It dissappeared as quickly as it arrived...
it was weird.....but no issues now...

I agree with what mtpockets said about cleaning the coil and scuff cover.

Otherwise no, I don't get a lot of falsing. It can sometimes happen when the sensitivity is set too high*, but I just lower it until the SE becomes stable. Sometimes I will let the SE re-noise cancel by pressing the button. Usually one or all of the above will eliminate all falsing.

Something else that is good to try is going to a smaller coil. Many times what we think is falsing is actually small targets on the edge of detection depth. A small coil will separate the good targets out of the mix.

I would try cleaning the coil and cover, get a good noise cancel, lowering sensitivity and see if anything improved. If not, then maybe someone else here might have some ideas.

*Sensitivity set too high may not mean much if you don't know where "too high" is. I have found that I can still get about the same depth at sensitivity 16 as I can at 28 in the mineralized ground we have here. So the setting is vague, but keep lowering it and the SE should settle down if it is running too hot on Sens.

I hope you find out what the culprit is.

You have got some good info and if it doesn't work might be time for a check by Minelab tech's...If possible have another Explorer hunter try yours out or perhaps vice-versa...Years ago I hunted with a XLT guru and decided to buy one as he was doing well..Well a brand new out of the box unit just wouldn't work well for me even with his settings..Finally I said lets trade machines for a hunt and then and there we both realized that the unit was faulty brand new from the factory so it went back under warranty and came back working just like my buddies..Remember it may have left the factory working well but may have been damaged in transit to the dealer or perhaps coming to you...

drop the sensitivity down some as I kept getting a lot of high pitched chirps exactly like you are talking about. Finally I ended up going to AUTO sensitivity at about 26 and things drasticly improved for me. I found my nicest barber dime in 30 years and then a SLQ a few days later. When I hunt in auto though...I also hunt with a high gain of 8 or 9. As Dan suggested though...your situation may be different so if going to auto sensitivity doesn't settle the SE down some...then you might want to let Minelab take a look at it.

Semi auto does quieten the se down a lot - try semi auto 30 that goes as deep as you will want to dig.

I make sure my detector is clean every trip out, coil cover is clean. I am in Oregon, so we do have some nasty ground here. I am hunting wide open with a gain of 5-6, sens between 18-26 depending on the soil conditions, and in manual. Even with it turned way down, I still get those high pitched tones. A lot of the time is when the coil makes contact with the ground/grass.

I had an Explorer 2 for a little while, I just don't remember this being an issue with it. It's driving me crazy, I don't want to miss any good targets, so I am having to recheck each false and it is really slowing me down.

Does anyone think it is a coil issue with the new design stock coil? I am more then likely just going to order a couple more coils and maybe this will help out. I wanted to get them anyway, so here is an excuse to buy them

Take your smallest cursor and blacken out a very thin line at the very upper right of your smart screen for about a half inch across the top.

Don't worry. Silver will still come in.

I have done that out in California where there were some bad hot rocks and that settled that issue with me for my Explorer XS.

I mentioned doing this to my hunting partner, but he said "are you crazy"! LOL He has been swing the SE for a couple years and the Ex2 for a long time. He is also thinking of selling the SE because of the falsing issues.

I just can't believe that Minelab would put out a product like this with issues. I mean, I have talked to some very experienced minelab users and they are all having the same issues as mine, to the point of thinking about selling the machine.

With so many people having the same issue, don't you think a fix would be coming soon? I'm sure Minelab is spending lots of cash on shipping for servicing this issue.

Thats what my XS does when there are hot rocks in the ground...its too bad you didn't have someone near by with a known ok working XS,or exII,or SE...just to see if it happens to them...Some places If I can't get away from them I drop sens. till they go away...If it does it everywhere then I guess you have a problem SE...sorry if this doesn't help...I am trying to stay awake tonight...kinda tired and hard to think straight...NH Bob seems to be doing great with his...he may be the man to talk to...Its one thing if you are not set up right for a certain spot and there is a correction you can make to fix it but there is also sometimes some spots just plan old cannot be detected cause of EXTREEM conditions...and then there is a LEMON SE which is defective and needs to be sent in for repairs. Sorry to hear your lack of having fun...I don't know what I would do if my XS ever broke down.......it is going on 5 yrs old and it has been good to me but its doing wierd things lately so I am worried. Hope you figure it out...HH

My XS does this and it drives me nuts...I found if I undue lower rod snap and slide it in and out and re tighten snap it goes away...seems to have something to do with either the strain on cable and connector in controller or what ever...I have to do this every now and then...sometimes I loosen connector and retighten and or make sure connector pins are not getting crappy...and make sure under coil cover is clean ...sometimes it is so sensitve just hitting a blade of grass makes it do it...till I do the above...and sometimes its just too high sens. and lower it till it acts ok. and I am sure you noise cancel just to start out right...even recancel from time to time...I hate to get this started but I hold mine on the ground in clean area and press cancel button and hold very still making sure my shovel or scoop or steeltoes are not too close....I hope the way to use noise cancel doesn't start another Bible thick response like it has happened before.

If your SE seems to false like a mother compared to your Explorer II or XS to the point that you are entertaining thoughts of wraping the SE around a tree then call Minelab customer support. Describe the falsing issue and make a point of noting how the Explorer II or XS did not false nearly as much. That is all I will say ahem, cough, wink, ahem.

no doubt...it is older and I need to take the time to clean connector better...beaches do create problems...but its just now and then...and strangely enough just by shortening the rod it seems to fix it till it happens again and then I push rod in and out a few times and seems to go away again. I get by but yeah I agree it shouldn't do that...and it should find more gold stuff also........Bad Detector!!!I should put it in time out and then see if it smartens up!....Maybe I should flash pics of other brands infront of it...it just may find more gold then...Love- Hate thing again...
