This oil producing area was without doubt the beginnings of the oil industry as we know it.

The first oil well in the Americas, I found out via google, was supposed to be the one found by accident in Kentucky in 1829 when a driller was attempting to get salt water.

Imagine his surprise when he got a gusher instead!!

There is no mention of this developing into any kind of "industry" as such.

No real knowledge of what to do with the stuff existed in that place at the time.

It's amazing how much change occured in such a short time.

Dig far back enough and there is probably an old Indian legend about an ancester creating the first oil tanker.

It's a short drive from me .......a bit over an hour. To be honest with you, I wasn't aware of it either until I drove through it about ten years ago. It's a neat lil' historic out of the way place :thumbup:
