Let me start out by saying it pays to swing on the way back to the car!
I had a little less than an hour for lunch today but felt like getting away from the computer a bit, so decided to hit the park close to home. Most all the parks around here are very new with little chance for old coins, but I enjoy getting out and picking up modern coins and an occasional good piece of jewelry. When it was time to leave, I was walking back to the parking lot swinging slowly and got a low tone with a solid ID of 11. Usually I don't dig signals that low, but before I started detecting today I did some testing on a couple of very thin gold bands my wife has. They came in at 6 and 9 which really surprised me, and is probably the only reason I bothered to dig the 11 signal. My Garrett Pro Pointer could pick up the signal from the surface of the grass, so I knew the target was only an inch or two deep. I cut a small plug about 3" deep, pinpointed the target and broke a piece of dirt off, revealing a silver colored ring band. I was thinking to myself please be white gold. When I pulled the ring out and saw PLAT inscribed in the middle of the ring and three good sized diamonds, I started to get excited.
The ring was only 2" deep about 3 feet to the right of the tree near the sidewalk. The Platinum is pretty heavy at 8 grams with the band alone worth about $480. My daughter and I are going to try to get it appraised tonight -- I'll let you know.
