I'm Starting to hate memorial pennies

I'm only finding memorial coins Ive doing what every one else is telling me to do please help I've tried what every one is telling me to do
 
Disappointed when I get that 12/38 reading. Corroding copper plated zinc pennies. They are worse than pulltabs because they read higher on the conductivity scale; at least until they corrode to a certain point, then they read all over the place. Can't even clean them up very well. More garbage to sort thru.

Yes sir, they are a pain in the back side. You gotta diggem' or you going to miss dimes. I had one come in last night at 12/46, 6" down??? uhg.
I don't don't know where your at, or the places your going, but if you're only getting Memorials.... find another place to go! Every place I've ever hunted, always gives up Wheaties, clad dimes and quarters.
Try the local school ball field. Go down the 1st and 3rd base lines were the parents sit. Is there a sliding hill you can go to. I always have good luck at those places.
Any old farm fields you can get permission to do? If you do do near the roads first.

I know what you are talking about! I'm very curious as to what part of the country that you are living in?The reason that I say this is because where I live,(and Tin Pan Man as well,Brian is a friend of mine who lives 15 miles from me), The dreaded 11-12/37-38 in the right spots are some goodies,including Bust and Seated Half dimes.I get a reading like that and the flutey tone to go with it in an older site.....Well it's Half dime time brother! Don't descriminate them out at older sites if you have some available.Best of luck man!
 
Indian Head cents and some old wheats can also come in at that range along with half-dimes, so your target's depth should also be considered.

Does the history of the spot you are hunting indicate that it was used 75 years ago or more? If so, and there was no major work done at the site, I might look a little deeper. If not, it may be time to move on...

Well, I have quite a memorial collection myself! Guess it's just part of the game. If you are ONLY finding pennies, maybe you should move to another spot. But like others have said, if you don't dig those signals, especially if they are at any depth at all, you will miss out on some good stuff! For example 12/35-38 can be a zinc penny, IH, worn silver coin, and even a gold coin ($1 I think?) so it would be bad to miss out on those... except the zincoln! :laugh:
 
Most of my growing collection is memorials - I am a little crazy anyway, and new at it. But I like finding any coin. It's like scratching a scratch ticket, seeing the matching number getting excited for a second - and then feeling disappointed when it's only a free ticket. But to me -that is all part of the fun and addiction of the game - but I am prolly one of the few who feels that way. Just a more optimistic way to look at it.
 
Last I looked the nickel has a metal value of 6c, plus manufacturing costs.

I agree, memorials are surely a pain. Especially the deep ones!
 
I minimize the memorials as suggested above like this; age of the dirt / site and depth of the coin. First I will say that If I am in an old site I dig anything that hits or try's to hit at 12 and ( ) whatever, if it is deeper than 6 inches. In not so old areas I will mentally chose not to dig (discriminate by brain) the 12 38-41s if they are shallow 1-4 inches. If the soil is recently disturbed in an old site I dig ALL signals on the 12 line even the mems as I want to find the odd items,tokens, etc. I have found some dang deep memorials in some hunts so far and that is a drag as deep targets get me goin...I am starting to tell the sound of the memorial better but am not trusting myself at that yet so I tend to check allot of signals trying to "guess" before digging and prove myself. I highly suggest you go to an older park and only look for targets that are 6 inches or deeper. Why dig the 12 38s if they are shallow? Use your depth gauge as a decision reference when you hit numbers in that range. Go for the deeper coins unless you feel you need to clean everything out of your way. I will say 90% of the silver dimes I knew would be silver before I dug them as they give good high tone and number and 80% of the copper Penny's as well but I agree that they are closer than I would like on my graph and sound. Hope one day they can figure how to separate that better.

I was at a spot and dug about eight memorial pennies in a row. When I was about to move on, the 9th penny turned out to be a scarce transportation token from a small town in Ohio. You just never know....HH
