indian head pennies

I have a question what is everyone getting for a reading on the trac

thanks stevew

Depends on the metallic content of the coin, as well as the soil conditions. I'd have thought that the metallic content would be the same for two coins made the same year. But I found two 1866's in the same general area that were a lot different. And it wasn't due to any adjacent targets or mineralzation issues. Even now in airtesting the TID's, one reads an 11-28 and the other is a 12-34. I've found some of the early dated ones that read as low as 22 on the conductive scale. And some of the later ones as high as 37. When I'm hunting indians, I get excited when I get any ferrous reading between 9 - 14, with a conductive reading from 22 - 38. JMHO HH Randy

Indian Head Pennies are a real challenge for me. If you're park hunting then dig every "zinc" signal 33-38, and consequently you'll bringing home a lot of zinc pennies (argh). Best way to increase your odds is to dig the deeper signals only.

...and have also found deep older Wheats all the way down to conductive 26!

Normally they'll be smack at 12-34....but have had them 35,36,38. I can't recall ever digging an IH under 34 though. What I like is I can usually tell the difference between an IH and a memorial just by tone. Certain memorials have fooled me into believing they were silver...seems like it just depends on depth.

I have dug 43 this year, and they are literally all over the place, I remember 3 coming in at 01-31, they were deep and iron was heavy. I have had them come in at 07-30, 08-30, 09-32-34, 10-28, 10-30, 32, 34............11-30, 32, etc.........like I said all over, you need to concentrate more on sound. The numbers are interesting to me, so I look at them before I dig. But sound means more to me

I agree with all these post for numbers on Indians they really are all over the place If I had to pick I would say 11,12- 28-38 All over the place
