Thanks, Ken. I emailed Clive this morning and then ordered the book. You're right, he is a really nice guy and I already have a couple of his books. Looking forward to this one as I'm trying to decide whether to try a PI or not. Thanks again.

As promised fellow hunters, here is information on the DF I purchased and as I use it there will be up-dates.

Yesterday evening I spent a few hours digging up 8 nickles, 4 quarters and 2 pennies along with a few nails and misc. bits of junk metal (Hair pins, bottle caps etc.).

This AM I found mostly quarters and more hair pins and other bits of junk metal.

Twenty minutes into this evenings hunt I dug up this white gold 14K ring with no sign of wear and the date '65 inside!

It has probably been in the water over 40 years!! (based on the condition.)

All the clad coins I found were in the water a long time based on the corrosion they suffered.

The current economy has me finding few if any new coins or new jewelry drops!!

This machine is causing me to work my digging arm harder than it has in a long time, but the results are there!!

So far the only complaint I have about the DF is the strap that secures the arm to the arm rest is too flimsy and doesn't allow the arm to freely slide in and out of the rest.

Also my dealer ordered a floating coil and it is a pain returning it to the bottom all the time. (I didn't think to tell him to order the weighted coil and he perhaps didn't know it might be a problem for me!

GL&HH Friends,

CJ

I Could be mistaken but i think ther is only one coil available for the dual field and is sold as near-nuetral quite a loose term as you have found out as it wants to float

Just have patience CJ especially if you are coming from using a VLF... I was lucky that way my first water machine was a PI... as others have said the coil floats a bit... why Whites made it like that is beyond me but thats life and at least for me its no big deal.... just learn the sounds and you will dig less junk down the road and more deep gold and goodies :)

I'll have to go back and check.

I'm sure I read somewhere it could be bought with a heavier, non-bouyant coil.

Perhaps it was a different detector!?

Thanks for your reply,

CJ

could be your getting the coils confused with the Surf pi pro, then you get a choice of the standard or diver coil. look forward to seeing how you get on with the DF, as i am thinking of getting one to use alongside my surf pi. my sons just getting into beach detecting, so he keeps borrowing my detectors!

first day out with df. happy to report had no problem keeping coil down in the surf . didnt find any deep targets today just 1.50 pulltabs and assorted junk all where pretty shallow. have a question about threshold i tried running it with high gain which is in clives book and turned down the pulse however i could not get a smooth threshold whenever i turned gain up i got a chattering threshold? even at preset settings threshold was chattering. when i turned gain down to about 10am i got smooth threshold. ok need to know are you df users using a smooth threshold when you hunt in the water or are you amping up gain and running with a chattering threshold. i also noticed when you lift coil off the bottom it beeps loudly . is this normal. thanks in advance gonna be a learning curve here i think after using excals for 10plus years

The area where I hunt has an Amtrac rail line about a half mile away and frequent aircraft traffic overhead so there is a lot of interference that can be annoying.

I have managed to locate some items in spite of this noisy situation while it is going on.

Things usually settle down after the train and planes have passed.

PI's are subject to this problem and a hunter must learn how to accept it and work around it.

I have found that gain at 3 oclock, pulse delay turned all the way down to zero and threshold at about 1 oclock works well for me.

The threshold may get tweeked a bit as I go along to keep the signal stable, but I dislike cranking it way up as some folks seem to like.

The machine and I are just getting aquainted with one another I'm sure these settings will vary with time, experience and local.

Happy hunting Friends,

CJ
