interesting day

Had a somewhat eclectic day of metal detecting today. Found seven wheats including a 1913D, 1917, 7 1919; a 1946D Roosevelt dime; the usual assortment of modern coins; and two unusual items. The first is a small, round aluminum container between the size of quarter and half dollar that reads: "Scotch-Tone Peroxide Face Cream (Greaseless) Scotch-Tone Oklahoma City". The other item is a half dollar sized medallion that reads: "Summer Race Meeting Oklahoma City 1912", with the number 464 inscribed in the center. I'm going to have to do some research on this one. I'm guessing that it doesn't have anything to do with a race that was run in the summer of 1912, but rather with the state of race relations in 1912, which weren't very good.

Neat finds Ag! I am curious what you find out about the medal..

GK,

I haven't been able to find out anything about the 1912 race meeting medal; but I did find out that the Scotch-Tone Company was in business from at least 1904 to at least 1932. They manufactured such items as toothpaste, cold tablets, hair dye rejuvenator, and of course face cream which were sold in local drug stores. When I found the Scotch-Tone container I thought it was just another aluminum twist cap, which I dig up by the hand-fulls in this park.

Hi Ag
I think it was a horse race. This is a newspaper clipping from 1911, which has the same wording as the medal you found.

GK,

Cool, thanks for the great info. Glad to know it was a horse race.

As others have said before: It's not just about finding coins. I love finding artifacts that can be traced back to a specific event.
