I was wondering if anyone has found an area that has to much interference to hunt at all. I just moved to Iowa from PA. and even though the ground is frozen, I wanted to see what kind of mineralization was in the back yard. When I turned it on outside I could not get it to stabilize at all. It was reading every vdi number possible and would pulse so bad in pin point that I could not ground balance. It didn't matter if the coil was waist high or on the ground, it was puking out every sound possible. I walked around the house with the coil in the air and it didn't get any better. The house is in town, but there is no overhead power lines or anything I could see that would mess with it that much. I hope it didn't get damaged in the move. Any suggestions on what might cause this?
 
No, not so far. I had to reduce gain and use correlate in some spots.

Common sources of electrical interference include: overhead electric power lines, underground power lines, other metal detectors, telephone lines carrying electronic data, computer systems, electric fences, old CRT-based televisions, cell phones, thunderstorms, fluorescent lights, metal vapor lamps, military aircraft with electronic warfare countermeasures activated, electric motors, VLF military communications systems, and automobile ignition systems. It will sometimes be the case at home, in the showroom, or in an urban environment that there are several different sources of electrical interference present simultaneously. WOW!!!

Stricter regulations have cut down on interference from electric light dimmers and auto ignition systems. However there has recently been a proliferation of VLF-UHF wireless communication systems (cell phones, Bluetooth, (WI-Fi, etc.) which often affect metal detectors. Overall, the potential for electrical interference is greater than it was a few years ago.

Also, modern high-end metal detectors are a lot more sensitive than older units, which will increase their vulnerability to electrical interference. In the discrimination mode, you
 
How far did you have to back off the gain? I back mine down to 3 from 12 and it didn't seem to make a difference. I'm starting to think I might have a coil issue. Thanks for the info.
 
Flintstone, Its a good idea but unfortunately I only have the one. I did the air test with gain at 15/Txb off and it was noisy but no overload, so it passed that test. Is there any other tests you know of (other than sending it in) to see if its working proper?
 
Try a different location like out in the country. If the problem persists, something is probably wrong with the detector and not an EMI issue.
 
What happens with no coil attached?
 
Larry, that was my plan to head out away from everything and see what happens, just been to busy at work to have the time. Maybe this Sunday I'll be able to.
 
I'm thinking bad coil. Sounds like the detector is good. Call Mary at Whites and explain what we have done. I wish you had another coil.
 
Rob, Me too!! I will thinking towards buying the SEF 10x12 for hunting cleaned out spots and back up for times like this. I just hate to send a good coil back to Whites when it was just operator error. I'm going to reset my program (Hi Pro) when I get home tonight and start over trying to get it calmed down to make sure I don't have it way out of whack somehow.

I have numerous areas that are not huntable. EMI can be a real downer and I hope the next Whites flagship model can noise cancel. Last weekend my hunting buddies and I went out and the EMI at a location that we can normally run a gain of 8+ was really bad. I had to turn my gain down to half that.

Solar flares and high sun activity also makes a difference. We have found that on days of high solar activity we have to run our gains lower. This may be because of increased radiant temperatures or EMI from the sun striking highly mineralized ground inducing eddy currents.

Buried power lines are by far the worse for me. But even with the gain at 4 I am finding silver dimes at 6" with iron all around, its a great detector.

Carl, I find that frequency offset certainly helps but is not the end all of fixes. Is there any chance that the next flagship could recognize the 60hz cycle and null it out? I am sure its more complicated than that but something on those lines, such as taking a sample and algorithm it out?
 
Three frequencies with salt compensate helps a lot with emi and false signals. I worked under power lines and I had to do something cause a lot of interference so I changed to salt compensate and ceased from all these sorts of emi and falsing. And you can raise sensitivity as well when salt compensate on.

I noticed this a while back and it helped me score an old gold ring. It was right on top of the buried lines, but I had to have the gain turned down so low.

I wonder if the new guys to the "V" know to hold the coil in the air and hold pinpoint and do frequency offset at the same time? I think Magic brought that to my attention 3 years ago. Where is that guy?

Not 3 frequency, low or higher frequency only medium. I think there was underground power lines as well as a railroad track.
Did not know about or try salt mode.
 
We have a couple places that cause massive emi with the v3i and vx3 but for some reason my mx5 runs smooth and i can max out sensativity .. My other detector runs smooth there also. So idk??

Thats my one complaint out of the 100's of positives. I have found I can work around most EMI situations but them darned dog fences and burried power lines are the worst.
